Scott Rabalais: What Saints coach Sean Payton didn’t say Sunday spoke volumes — and could mean change is on the way
1 Attachment(s)
ATLANTA — Sean Payton stood at a podium outside the Saints locker room Sunday, basking in the glow of an always-satisfying win over the archrival Atlanta Falcons — a team Payton has owned in his 10 years in New Orleans.
He was determined to stay focused as long as possible on the dramatic 20-17 victory, certainly knowing full well he would eventually be asked to comment on his future with the Saints. A franchise he has put his stamp on more than any other coach — or two — these Saints have ever had. “We have the players in” Monday, Payton said. “We have to evaluate the roster, and we have a lot of things to do. If I feel the need to get you an itinerary, I will. That’s the answer. I can’t be more clear.” Actually, Payton was the opposite of clear. He was murky. He was testy. He was cloudy with a chance of bombshells, as in a huge, earth-shaking announcement that could come in the days ahead that he is leaving for another NFL franchise. With Bill Belichick and Pete Carroll entrenched in New England and Seattle, it’s no stretch to say Payton is the most sought-after movable coach in the NFL this year. That he didn’t want to talk about it is understandable. But the subject won’t go away until the NFL’s musical chairs are all filled by other coaches and he’s still filling the same chair at his office in Metairie. Payton could have made it go away. With just a few words in a dark and echoing corridor of the Georgia Dome, he could have said that he is staying in New Orleans. Those words would have sent a tsunami warning throughout pro football and ended all the speculation — or at least reduced it to a low tide. But people basically want to tell the truth. They don’t want to utter something they will eventually have to double back on, words they will have to eat. Payton couldn’t bring himself to say he is staying in New Orleans — even if just to momentarily cool the speculation — because he knows leaving for New York or San Diego/Los Angeles or Miami or some other NFL address is a distinct possibility. Cynics will bay that this is all a dust storm swirled up by the media. But there is too much smoke in too many forests for there not to be a fire someplace. this is the house that sp and drew built so any idea of replacing either one sends fear through me. just make sure if they do it to a team mortgage the future and have a chance to win now. NYJ could use both.

All I know is one thing is for certain, Drew has to either restructure or he will be cut. No way can the team afford a 30 million hit against the cap this year...
I imagine that will have some impact on whether Payton wants to stay or not... |
Re: Scott Rabalais: What Saints coach Sean Payton didn’t say Sunday spoke volumes — and could mean change is on the way
My God the press cant wait to drive him elsewhere. They wont be happy till they get him in a big city

Re: Scott Rabalais: What Saints coach Sean Payton didn’t say Sunday spoke volumes — and could mean change is on the way
Maybe we really want Sean gone. You know, Jay Glazer first reported 2nd round compensation. That guy doesn't make splash reports. If the ultimatum was "get rid of your buddies" then I understand front office decision. On the other hand getting rid of Drew Brees is just stupid.

I wouldn't settle for less then a 1st. We're not as far off as people think.

I'm ready for Sean Payton to leave. Not too much because of him personally, but because of his relationship with his good buddies coordinating our defensive line and line backers. The Saints do a terrible job developing talent at those positions, we hardly get sacks, it seems like when we blitz that even gets picked up and our secondary pays for it. I've read different articles about the coach coming in from Jacksonville and I'm not sure how that will work out, but I just hope we get something really good in return. Sean Payton has 2 years left on his contract and I'm sure he will have the last say on where he ends up. We are a much better team than what our record indicated this year . . . . smh

We could always go for comic effect and give the job to Mike Smith
Could you imagine the clowns boards if he won the big one with Brees. |
Re: Scott Rabalais: What Saints coach Sean Payton didn’t say Sunday spoke volumes — and could mean change is on the way
What do you expect SP to say, especially right after he owned the FailClowns yet again?
We know change is coming. IMHO, SP stays, Brees is extended with a restructure, we get a new coach or two, we we have a kick arse draft. |
Re: Scott Rabalais: What Saints coach Sean Payton didn’t say Sunday spoke volumes — and could mean change is on the way
I think Payton said a lot by not saying anything.
If he planned to stay in NO a simple "I am not leaving NO, and plan to build this team to another championship", or anything to that effect, then I would be set on him staying. Payton said nothing because he is considering a change and I don't blame him. A shift in ownership is coming soon and Payton wants to stay out of that mess. Brees shouldn't be going anywhere and if Carmichael and Brees stay our offense will continue to be proficient. I would like us to bring in a defensive HC like Fangio or Tomsula. As far as compensation for Payton. We shouldn't let him go for anything less than two 1st round draft picks. |

If SP is traded, the following is our baseline.
At the time Jon Gruen was traded, he had a record of 38-26. He won the AFC west twice in 4 seasons, once getting the Raiders to the AFC title game. Oakland got 2 first rd picks, 2 second rd picks and 8 million bucks from Tampa Bay for Jon Gruden. Sean Payton is 93-61. Won 3 division titles, 5 playoff appearances, 2 NFC Championship appearances, and a Super Bowl title ...and some media think we'd accept a second rd pick for him Let's start at what Oakland got for Gruden. Saints should get no less than that for a coach much more successful. IMO Saints should be demanding 3 first round picks and every other pick of that team's 2016 nfl draft. If they want a SB winning coach then give us your entire 2016 draft and the next 2 first rounders. |

Would Matt Patricia leave New England? (talking about DC job)
Dolphins want him as HC... |

If Sean Payton leave, Loomis will follow right behind him down the road. Trading Sean isn't plausible. Loomis have his hand into too many cookie jars he need to focus on with saints or pelicans

:goodidea: I totally agree.......mostly. We should bring in a new DC, A new ST coach, LB coach and a new D-line coach to start. Curtis Jphnson is available last I heard. The current WR coach may have coached up Cooks, Snead and Coleman but I don't know if it was natural talent and hard work or good coaching. We'll see if Ireland is the real deal after the draft. If he can replicate last years production we will be much more competitive. Also, if we could hit on a couple of Good FA's this time around this team will have the depth to survive injury riddled seasons like last season. If we could field our starters the Saints would kick arse on both offense and defense. We are not that far away. Have you ever heard the term "worse to first"? :airguitar: |

Re: Scott Rabalais: What Saints coach Sean Payton didn’t say Sunday spoke volumes — and could mean change is on the way
If Payton thinks the New Orleans media and press is bad, he should just wait until he ends up in San Francisco or New York.... They will get one earful of his "he has a knee" and "next question" vague non-answer type stuff at the podium, and the press there will be grabbing the pitchforks and skewering him on his own words. To paraphrase the Trumpster, those guys are sharks, they are not nice people....the reporters will absolutely rip him to pieces and eat him alive on live television, if Payton goes to a market like that, God help him....

Re: Scott Rabalais: What Saints coach Sean Payton didn’t say Sunday spoke volumes — and could mean change is on the way
After listening at Mort on ESPN regarding SP and possibly "landing spots", I don't think NY will be a viable option as they (Giants) may not be willing to give a lot of compensation for Sean.
The saga continues. |

I think no one outside the organization knows anything. It's all speculation. I'm hoping for the best. Good coach's don't grow on trees, just ask the Browns.

For people who want Coughlin: watch how they finish games and ludicrous clock management. Their defense is a "little" better lol
