Payton and Saints GM Mickey Loomis were in meetings for hours in New Orleans on Monday. How it turns out, I don’t know. I do know that many around Payton think he’s ready to go—not that he’ll be miserable if nothing can be worked out with another team and he has to stay (he’s under contract with the Saints for two more seasons). But he understands that the defense can’t be built back up in a day, and he understands that if Drew Brees doesn’t take some sort of contract modification to lower his $30-million cap number for 2016, the Saints might have a different quarterback this fall. So it may be time to get out while the getting’s good. The Niners will have about 12 draft choices in 2016, with at least $52 million to spend under the 2016 salary cap. And they have the seventh pick in the first round, good for Payton to go find his new quarterback. All in all, there’s a lot about this job for Payton to like—and it would solve a major credibility problem for the embattled Niners czar, Jed York.

I think, if they want him, the Giants have the best case. They at least have a quarterback. How is Gabbert or Kaepernick gonna run his offense? Not very well.

Brees said he would restructure and IMO the defense isn't that far off so it is sounding like there is some internal pressure on SP

SP also coached at the Giants.
I will give Peter King credit, he didn't flat out LIE and say "Sources are telling us Sean Payton is very likely interested in San Fran" or that it's a done deal. He said he doesn't know and said San Fran has a lot of draft picks with a CEO/Owner that has credibility issues. That's attractive for any coach, except for the Jed York part. Under his watch Harbaugh was pushed out. Didn't exactly work out so well for the 49ers.

If Sean leaves my hope is that Bress does restructure an extension and Pete Carmicheal stays on as the OC. He can run our O with Drew. A defensive minded head coach would be nice since we cannot get a DC in spite of our efforts to do so.

I'd rather see him go to Atlanta or Dallas before he helps that sewer pit of a team in SF climb out of the bottom of the NFL.

The 49ers have replaced the Raiders as the NFL's disfunctional poster child. Why would an established coach go there. The Fish have head case Suh. Payton spent the past year getting rid of issue players.

None of the makes sense. Just writers churning for readers as the off season approaches.

Maybe if SP goes to Miami he will release Suh and F'up their salary cap; of course only the rest of the AFC East would benefit from it!

Remember Doug Marrone was the Bills head coach and offensive mind from 2013-2014 when he quit at the end of the 2014 season.

"IF" and I do mean if, with 2 years remaining on his contract and leaves, it want be cheap, ask (2) 1st round picks and a 4th in 2017 and 2018 and a 2nd rounder this draft. I would also sign and trade Brees(IF) if Payton leaves. Can't see extending or paying 30 million with a new coach that brings a different style than Payton. 2 1st for Brees 1 this draft and 1 in 2017.

But in that situation we were the instigators. Montana was better than anything we had. I was not a NFL fan then(I was a child) so I don't know the whole situation.
