Re: Sean Payton would 'put my happy-face on' if 'Hard Knocks' chose Saints
I have not had enough coffee yet this morning to remember which team/season it was, but there was definitely one year in the show where they focused more personally on a handful of the PLAYERS who were on the bubble, struggling to make the roster. They spent a big chunk of the show following their families and their lives, as they tried to make the team -- and then the coaches and practices and team meetings in that season, were all sort of distant and far away, and almost incidental to the plot lines of the bubble players they were following. It was some team that did it a couple years ago -- I wish I could remember which one -- but the actual starters and head coach were basically only on the screen for a few minutes every episode. It was an obviously deliberate attempt at a "bottom up" approach instead of "top down" or getting too far inside the machine. They actually didn't get any closer to the "war room" or inner sanctums, than any of the minor bubble players did.
So if the decree comes down that it absolutely has to be the Saints, I could actually see them structuring the show that way, to get more into bubble guys like your Eric Lorig, Kyle Wilson, or Damian Swann type stories, or intensely getting into the lives of some of the really minor veterans like Jamarca Sanford & Matt Flynn, following them around. As much as I know Drew loves a camera, I really do not see him having to do anything MORE for this than the same Youtube QB challenge type stuff that he already does in camp, except with a better camera team.
Once I thought about it like this, I didn't fear it nearly as much. I almost feel like this new, rejuvenated Payton we have, could handle it, as long as they put some parameters in place, exactly like he said years ago -- "no cameras when I'm cutting a player" etc. Because Sean Payton takes the personal stuff really seriously, and some things are sacred to the sport of football. There are some things that are for players and coaches only, and the world isn't meant to see. If they can respect that, then I think Payton can learn to respect them and let them do their thing.
