Sean Payton would 'put my happy-face on' if 'Hard Knocks' chose Saints

This year could be the show's last chance at the Saints for awhile!

Even so, Payton promised to "put my happy-face on" if the show picked the Saints. After a few moments of reflection, he said, "Who are we kidding?"

At the end of the lighthearted discussion, Payton turned serious and said there were some areas where the 'Hard Knocks' cameras wouldn't be allowed.

"I said this once at the beginning of my career: 'I'll never be videotaped releasing a player,'" he said.

I know it would be a circus and a distraction that we don't need, BUT...I wouldn't mind seeing what actually goes on at training camp.

Unfortunately, I think it's a strong possibility. I know he's not going to like it and it'll be a constant distraction. But I think Goodell will make it happen just to piss off Sean. That and his glorious press conference about staying in NOLA is going to make it something networks want.

I prefer hard knock over a home game in another continent. Our luck we might get both.

I read on NFL.com that something like the last 6 teams on hard knock all have improved their record from the year before.

The London games are a disgrace. And thats from somebody living within 15 miles from the stadium that holds the game.

In what way? I have a lot of friends that has been flying over from Sweden who has really enjoyed them. And especially enjoyed the possibility of watching real NFL games closer to home.

I just dont think home fans should loose a game. They only get 8 as it is

If it happens like once every 10 years I think its okay but if it was every other year I think it would be a problem.

The curse of hard knocks. No team has ever recovered.

Who watches that show? I have literally never watched a single episode.

This idea that we're somehow going to see what it's like is really dumb. People tend to not be very genuine when the camera is on them, and there are always going to be certain things that teams won't allow you to see. It's not interesting.

Hands up
I watch it now and again. Remember we dont get much football coverage over here. I used to be good, but like must things is getting worse. The Ravens and Jets were good

Re: Sean Payton would 'put my happy-face on' if 'Hard Knocks' chose Saints

I have not had enough coffee yet this morning to remember which team/season it was, but there was definitely one year in the show where they focused more personally on a handful of the PLAYERS who were on the bubble, struggling to make the roster. They spent a big chunk of the show following their families and their lives, as they tried to make the team -- and then the coaches and practices and team meetings in that season, were all sort of distant and far away, and almost incidental to the plot lines of the bubble players they were following. It was some team that did it a couple years ago -- I wish I could remember which one -- but the actual starters and head coach were basically only on the screen for a few minutes every episode. It was an obviously deliberate attempt at a "bottom up" approach instead of "top down" or getting too far inside the machine. They actually didn't get any closer to the "war room" or inner sanctums, than any of the minor bubble players did.

So if the decree comes down that it absolutely has to be the Saints, I could actually see them structuring the show that way, to get more into bubble guys like your Eric Lorig, Kyle Wilson, or Damian Swann type stories, or intensely getting into the lives of some of the really minor veterans like Jamarca Sanford & Matt Flynn, following them around. As much as I know Drew loves a camera, I really do not see him having to do anything MORE for this than the same Youtube QB challenge type stuff that he already does in camp, except with a better camera team.

Once I thought about it like this, I didn't fear it nearly as much. I almost feel like this new, rejuvenated Payton we have, could handle it, as long as they put some parameters in place, exactly like he said years ago -- "no cameras when I'm cutting a player" etc. Because Sean Payton takes the personal stuff really seriously, and some things are sacred to the sport of football. There are some things that are for players and coaches only, and the world isn't meant to see. If they can respect that, then I think Payton can learn to respect them and let them do their thing.

As somebody who doesnt get to see anything about the Saints or their players id love it. But i know the team doesn't want or need it this year id rather someone else hot it. Anyway as i said before i think the rules are the can only force a team if nobody volunteers

I'm in the same boat. I don't want it to be our team but if we were forced into it I would love to see the inner workings. It would be a distraction and has zero benefit to our team.

Really don't think Payton would be too cooperative with hard knocks. Hell he cancelled joint practices with the Texans this year because it would have been on hard knocks.

Just swallow a little harder. That stuff's awful to try to clean up.

Imagine the entire B&G fan base going through that on a weekly basis. The media'd come up with some clever name like the Drew Flu for it.

Hell no! Better give us NFL Europe back instead.

Re: Sean Payton would 'put my happy-face on' if 'Hard Knocks' chose Saints

Here's how they figure out what team is on Hard Knocks: team did not make the playoffs in the last two years, were not on the show the last 10 years and/or do not have a first-year head coach. Then again if no team volunteered to be on the show, the NFL has the power to "force" a team to do it.

I'd rather not see the Saints on this show but looks like they don't have much say in the matter

I miss NFL Europe, it was the closest thing the NFL came to having a minor league system and it game me something to watch during the spring since I loathe the NBA

"A source in the room told NFL Media Insider Ian Rapoport the league passed a rule Tuesday during the NFL Fall Meeting that will compel one team per year to participate in the HBO/NFL Films joint venture, "Hard Knocks."

The league still will ask for volunteers. If one is not forthcoming, a team will be appointed. All organizations will be eligible with the exception of those that have a first-year head coach; teams that have made the playoffs in at least one of the last two seasons; and teams that have participated in the previous 10 seasons. "

Owners pass 'Hard Knocks' rule at NFL Fall Meeting - NFL.com

So I guess Goodell would be the one enforcing it but the decision comes from the owners themselves.

Hard knocks at the Briarwood country club. Now that is how you get a team ready to win a Lombardi.

Guess I'm in the minority. I have watched the show and I think all seasons (HBO GO). I wouldn't mind the Saints being on it, I like seeing the other side of the football "industry', even though it is selective glimpses.

I actually really like the show too!

I remember the 2009 Bengals hard knocks, we played them in preseason and Brees threaded a TD pass between 3 defenders, all it showed was the defensive coaches saying " Jesus F'ing Christ" LOL.

It's not going to be the Saints.

Teams are moving to L.A., second biggest TV market in the US. It'd be one of the teams moving to/back to L.A., most likely the Rams: prodigal sons return to L.A. I'd think, the NFL would be all about that.

It makes for a bunch of great storylines and would help in creating even more interest in that market. It would make a great deal of sense from a marketing standpoint.
