this is a discussion within the Saints Community Forum; Wondering if the Saints or even Lovie would consider it. I'm sure Lovie would like to land another HC gig, but if not, this would be pure gold for us. Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-G900A using Tapatalk...

Any chance of Lovie becoming our DC?

I doubt he wants to take a step back. There was no reason for him to be fired. He did a great job and this just sets that organization back again.

Lovie runs a cover-2.
We have about 4 players that fit that scheme. I don't think he'd be a good fit here. |

Re: Any chance of Lovie becoming our DC?
Yeah like others have said, Lovie has always had monstrously good and big front 7's, that's kind of one of his things, and we have nothing at all like that anywhere on the team right now. Cover 2 would be terrible with the players we have. I'm sure he would be good for finding front 7 guys and drafting in the war room, but it would be years away and it'd be yet another defensive wrinkle that would take years to figure out, added on top of the elusive 3-4 or 4-3 issues we already have.
I really like and respect Lovie, he has rung Payton and the Saints' bell a number of times. But I think there are too many teams with vacancies and Lovie has too high expectations and too good a track record right now, to settle for a DC spot. In this case in particular, it's not like Tampa was unraveling or falling apart on the field, they were actually getting better on his watch, so there's no reason for him to consider a downgrade until every single other head coaching vacancy in the league has been explored and considered. Just off the top of my head, I think the 49ers and Browns or heck, even the Eagles, would be better destinations for HIM, from his point of view, than taking a downgrade and coming to the Saints right now. I just have a feeling he will land a HC job somewhere else, and maybe even a very good one. Now if Payton and Drew were gone and we were drafting at the top and it was a total BLOW UP THE TEAM year, starting completely over building for the next decade, I might be really excited by it. He would definitely be near the top of my short list for Saints head coach, in an alternate universe. |

Cover 2 works however I don't think we have the proper players to successfully run it & it's not the most aggressive style of defense. I'd personally prefer the AZ style of defense (blitzing).
His D was ranked around 24th in points allowed last two seasons. Not necessarily an improvement & he had good talent on defense. |

I know a lot of great linebackers was developed on his teams. no way will he take a BIG step back to be a linebacker coach but ole boi how nice it would be if he did.

Re: Any chance of Lovie becoming our DC?
Thats why i was saying offering Singletary the LB coaches gig. He wants back into coaching and i cant see somebody offering him a HC job. He worked with yhe Ravens LB when they were one of the best group in league history. Get him mentoring Anthony. The LB start looking good and he makes himself a good choice for a DC job. He has a pair of great young talented LB to work with in Kikaha and Anthony. We are also wasting Edebali talent under Vitt too
