I think a lot of that has to do with the "grass in greener on the other side" principle. Its just human nature to try and advance in your profession, they gave it a shot and found it they couldn't cut it. If anything I'm surprised that the organization welcomed them back with such open arms, looks like its smart to not burn bridges

It hardly ever is a smart thing to burn bridges. If you get to a high enough level in a profession its gonna be a quite small circle and everybody pretty much "knows" everybody. If you are bad at your job or act like an ass people will know.
