New Orleans Saints hire 3 new assistants, ESPN reports
The New Orleans Saints have added Dan Campbell, Joe Lombardi and Aaron Glenn to their coaching staff, according to a report from ESPN.
All three coaches have ties to head coach Sean Payton. Campbell, 39, was most recently interim head coach for the Miami Dolphins. He played tight end for the New York Giants and Dallas Cowboys while Payton was an assistant on those Bill Parcells-coached teams. Campbell signed with the Saints in 2009 but never played because of injury. Lombardi, 44, was an assistant with the Saints before being hired as offensive coordinator for the Detroit Lions after the 2013 season. He was fired by the Lions after the team started 1-6 in 2015. Glenn, 43, was an NFL cornerback for 15 seasons, ending his career with the Saints in 2008. He was most recently an assistant with the Cleveland Browns. Two assistants have recently left the Saints. Secondary coach Wesley McGriff was hired as co-defensive coordinator at Auburn. Quarterbacks coach Mike Neu was hired as head coach at Ball State. Glenn is the likely replacement for McGriff, and Lombardi would be expected to take over for Neu. The arrival of Campbell, who has only coached tight ends in the past, could be part of a staff reorganization. The NFL Network reported his title would be "assistant head coach/tight ends." The Saints' currently have a tight ends coach -- Dan Roushar -- and an assistant head coach -- linebackers coach Joe Vitt. Roushar has previously coached running backs and offensive line, so he could be moved to another spot as part of the changes. Payton raved about Campbell when he was promoted to interim head coach of the Dolphins last October. "He's a fantastic guy, a great worker, a great teammate," Payton said. "He's someone that is tough, strong. I can't say enough good things." Lombardi, the grandson of legendary coach Vince Lombardi, had a close relationship with Saints quarterback Drew Brees during his time with the Saints. "Joe was more than just a coach for me. He was a mentor in a lot of ways," said Saints quarterback Drew Brees before the Saints played the Lions in 2014. "We had a great quarterback room, a great dynamic. All of us just seemed to get along so well." New Orleans Saints hire 3 new assistants, ESPN reports | NOLA.com |
W.T. Sherman is my favorite General. After all he did order Atlanta to be burned to the ground.
