Sean Payton has always been a student of the NFL. The New Orleans Saints head coach doesn't just study Xs and Os. He also analyzes the league's successful teams and what makes them tick. It's why he calls the New England Patriots "the IBM of the NFL."

At some point during their offseason roster construction plans, Payton and the Saints football operations staff will look at the trends from this past season, what worked for the league's elite teams and what didn't work for the also-rans.

I usually try to be a pretty positive person, but Jeff Duncan is by far the absolute worst Saints beat writer. I truly think this guy hates this football team. I wish he would go away forever.

I only agree with two of his points:

1) less penalties - DUH
2) manage the cap

And yes, we need a better defense but it doesnt have to be dominant
