Building a defense

Watching SNL with a special appearance of Von Miller kind of got me thinking about our defense and the future of NFL defenses as a whole. The NFL is a copycat league as the cliche states and it seems to be true. After seeing the Super Bowl I think everyone out there is going to try to build an offense just like the Broncos.

They are going to focus on finding Von Miller types who are fast and furious and as opposed to players who are big thumpers who cave the pocket. It is likely you will see some of these bigger guys slip a little bit in the draft because coaches are looking for the next Von Miller. Problem is, Miller is a special player, once in a decade maybe. Coaches will try to make it happen non the less. It might even bring the FA price down on some of the bigger guys.

Eventually someone will figure out how to contain these fast guys, because most of the league will be doing it. This will mean the few teams who have kept the bigger guys and "old school" defenses will be in the minority, therfore there will be less familiarity making it harder for other teams who are built with personnel hired to contain the" fast" defenses
I wonder if anyone will slip to us in the draft that would be worth building the defense around. I think it is a mistake to try and make it work with a fast and furious defense when the personnel for that is hard to find. Hell the Saints have been trying for years, like with Gallette, and we all know how that has been working.

Re: Building a defense

You're right a copy cat league...

The blue print is DEFENSE. Doesn't matter who or where you just need a D.
Seattle - NE - NYG - DENVER.

I don't think it takes that one player it takes a few of them like something in the range of 11.

Re: Building a defense

I thought we were on our way to creating one of the best and most innovative defenses in 2013, all those 3 safeties looks that worked so well.

Then we tried to copy cat the Seahawks defense, but we missed one massive factor out - we had zero front 4 pressure.

All those CB's over 6 feet tall are useless without any pressure on the QB.

Re: Building a defense

This years draft is top heavy. Assuming the Saints have the opportunity to take the best LB or pass rusher, you have to do it.

I read respected scout/analyst Mike Mayock had A Robinson from Bama as his #5 rated DT however others see him as a true #1.

Interesting.

Jaylon Smith LB Notre Dame

If your medical staff says all is good you and even if he has to sit out a year you have to think long and hard on passing on him.
