The Saints have replaced offensive coordinator Mike McCarthy with former QB coach Mike Sheppard after interviewing a number of candidates for the position. We’re told it seems that the team took the easy way out instead of maybe doing what is best for the team. Sheppard spent the 2001 season as offensive coordinator in Buffalo, leading the Bills to the 13th-ranked offense in the league. He certainly has the résumé, but sources say the move was also seen as a safe one rather than taking a risk on another candidate. Head coach Jim Haslett knows he can work with Sheppard and is comfortable giving him the keys to the offense. QB Aaron Brooks is comfortable with Sheppard as well and has developed into a more dependable player under his tutelage. But for an offense that seemed stagnant at times last season, there is talk that the Saints may have been better off bringing in some fresh blood to provide new ideas for the offense. The question now is just how different the offense will be under Sheppard than it was under McCarthy, who bolted for the 49ers in January.
