Landry, who also spent 30 years with Southwest Airlines, according to the Team Landry website, was diagnosed with a motor neuron disease in the ALS family in 2010, shortly after the Saints won the Super Bowl. It was confirmed as ALS in 2012.
Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis, also known as Lou Gehrig's Disease, attacks the nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord that control muscle movement, according to the ALS Association. Landry's website said he was admitted to the ICU last week. "Our hero has endured so much during this time...his body is deteriorating but his mind is sharp as ever," the post said. "ALS sucks! As his ALS journey comes to an end, the support, prayers and positive vibes have been felt through and through. The events we have had, dinners, walks, and gatherings have been so important to Steve and his family." Landry had close relationships with Saints players by virtue of his work with the equipment staff. In a feature on WWL-TV last year, Landry shared a message from former tight end Jimmy Graham: "To Steve, thank you for putting up with me and helping me become a man in this locker room, no matter how lost or bad my day was, you always brightened it with a big smile and a kind word. Merry Christmas, Jimmy Graham #80." read more |
