According to NOLA.com:

Saints leading receiver Marques Colston released after 10 seasons

New Orleans Saints wide receiver Marques Colston has been released.

Colston concludes his Saints career as the leading receiver in franchise history, establishing team records for receptions (711), yards (9,759) and touchdowns (72). His 66.8 receiving yards-per-game ranked second only to Joe Horn.

Known as the "Quiet Storm," Colston's personality was a stark contrast to many receivers of his generation. He didn't seek out attention, and often shunned it, in times of both success and failure.

I'm sure they offered him the 2.5 million dead money as a 1 year contract. Stupid if they didn't and stupid if he refused.

Re: Colston Released

With the Browner release that will give us 11 million in cap space. With Brees and Morestead coming up we should be close to 20 million. Better than any of us thought I'm sure.

Thank You, Marques Colston, for being the consummate professional...

You played the game with a stoic confidence that made success even sweeter...

Talking media heads, distracted by their own self-promotion, missed out on your terrific game...

But as Saints fans, we're forever grateful for the effort and success you gave us...

And we ask your forgiveness, as we feel sorry for ourselves as we know we'll miss you donning the Black and Gold...

I knew it was coming but when i heard for sure still got a lil misty eyed. A great guy and on field professional, too bad more players aren't like him.

This is the side of football that sucks......even though we know it happens all the time. I just hope he's done done and retires with only playing for one team, which is pretty rare these days.

I heard a lot of teams need receivers this year. Which really ticks me off that we waited and waited until everyone else wanted what we wanted too.

There are some reports coming out of workouts and all that he lacks speed. Honestly, we have speed already on our team. His name is Cooks and so far speedy receivers have done squat for us other than him(cough TJ or TG cough). Physical toughness, which is what he possesses, is what we need.

That said he may be the only legit receiver in this class so he will not fall to us.

Re: Colston Released

I never expected them to keep Colston another year. For all he has done in the past, there was no real reason to bring him back. He just kind of gets in the way when he's out there. Makes a play once in a while, but he doesn't do anything that can't be done by pretty much any receiver. He simply did not age very well on the field.

But I enjoyed his good years and wish him the best.

an the end of an saints era is almost upon us. slowly things are changing and now the pieces that are leaving were the heart and soul of what made it so special. what a class act.

Really hard to imagine him playing for any other team.

Definitely my favorite WR to play the game and easily the most classy. Hard to understand why he never made a pro bowl.

Hope he come back as a coach.

He would make an outstanding WR coach, he learned from one of the best in Curtis Johnson.

Not to be critical Smash, but you could have had two (2) more images in there of Colston burning Atlanta and Tampa Bay... ;)

My favorite is of Payton shaking his hand pre-game; still QB at heart, Payton really appreciates Dwight Clark-type receivers...

With Colston gone we are either going with a WR similar to Treadwell or we will get a high dollar one in FA. Wouldnt surprise me if we got Treadwell somehow. This defense is loaded with defense and a tall legit number 1 receiver is a huge need. More than most realize.

I'd sure love to have a stacked offense for Brees' last few seasons and his replacement's first couple.

Having a combination of Treadwell, Cooks, Snead and Coleman all entering their prime will certainly help the transition.

But after that I'd love to see all defense, with maybe an OG or TE squeezed in there somehow.

Marques was one of the best and classiest ever to suit up for us. Forever a Saint.

I once read a comment from Brees where he stated that Colston could read a defense better than most QB's. It seemed that he and Brees were always on the same page. The rare combination of size, hands and intellect meshed with Payton's high IQ offense and made Colston great.

Gonna miss him.

That explains how Colston excelled so well in finding holes in the zone.

A while back it was Joe Horn, now Colston ... big shoes to fill again at WR1.

Re: Marques Colston says goodbye and thanks to Saints

Knowing how loved and respected Colston is by the Saints and fans, is there a chance the failclowns would try to sign Colston to rub it in our face?

It was bad enough that Hebert, Anderson & Horn played for them! It would break my heart if Colston went there!

I guess it would depend on if Colston still wants to play.

I wouldn't worry about missing out on a WR in the first round. There are plenty of good WRs that can be found in later rounds. Colston, Graham, Stills proved that one

According to the Score editors this is a bad wr class.

Wide Receivers in the NFL need to be able to catch the ball - consistently...

that ability is starting to become a lost art in the NFL...

This is not a deep class and everything I'm reading projects this as the worst class in the modern, contemporary era...

Having that many weapons could extend Brees career a year or two. As his accuracy and arm deminish these guys have the ability to make the tough catches. I am totally on board with your assesment. Treadwell at 1 then defense, then guard and TE. I think we can find a guard in FA. He wont have to acclimate to the speed of the NFL and can step right in to protect Drew. Even great guards have trouble acclimating to the NFL as rookies. Offensive line is a position group where experience is almost as important as talent. Almost.
