Saints' Luke McCown serves as more than a punchline with new deal
 

Drew Brees helped push his good buddy Luke McCown to national prominence in 2015 with the New Orleans Saints backup quarterback starring in a hilarious Verizon commercial. McCown proved to be quite the spokesman for the cellular company, one that Brees heavily endorses.

A total coincidence shoved McCown into action for his day job after Brees sustained a right shoulder injury and only shortly after the commercial hit the airwaves. McCown didn't lead the Saints to a win against eventual NFC champion Carolina in Week 3. He certainly proved his value as Brees' backup, though.

That performance helped spur the Saints to re-sign McCown on Thursday evening. McCown agreed to a two-year deal worth a reported $3 million, including a $500,000 signing bonus.

I like it. Super cheap and he proved last year that he is very capable of running the offense if needed. Good move.

smart move. one of the best backups in the NFL. vastly under rated. He is a tough guy.

Much needed. GG would more than likely not been ready. Also serves as a safety net in case drew bolts or retires next year.

That's a decent raise.
McCown is serviceable, but we are going to have to carry 3, and I would much rather have had GG further along than this. We don't exactly have an extra 1.8 mill lying around to pay a backup

CYA brother. He may turn out to be a beast but why throw him in when he is not ready? Im sure he could be servicable. We don't want what happened to Denver to happen to us.

Denver has not really lost anything. I don't think Osweiler is good at all.

He can get the job done while GG gets time to develop. We don't know how well Grayson has been doing at practice or how well he is progressing. If Drew goes down we still have a chance to win with McCown under center. We'd have a much better chance if we brought in a couple of strong guards in free agency to shore up the offensive line though I do believe.
