Saints match Chicago Bears’ offer, retain tight end Josh Hill

1 Attachment(s)
The New Orleans Saints appear to be set at tight end for the next three years.

The Saints matched the Bears’ three-year, $7.5 million offer to restricted free agent Josh Hill on Friday, adding Hill to a group that this offseason has brought in Coby Fleener and brought back Michael Hoomanawanui on a three-year deal.

Before free agency opened, New Orleans tendered Hill to the tune of $1.67 million, allowing the Saints to have the right of first refusal if any team tried to sign him away.

Hill, 25, has played the H-back, or move tight end, role for the Saints the past two seasons, hauling in 30 catches for 296 yards and seven touchdowns.

With Fleener and Hoomanawanui locked up for the foreseeable future and limited salary-cap space — the Saints opened the day with just $273,215 available — there was widespread speculation that New Orleans might allow Hill to move on to Chicago.

Hard to cover 3 big men with Coleman(6'6), Hill(6'5), Fleener(6'6)

"Bears’ offer sheet to Hill is a three-year deal worth a maximum of $7.5 million and includes $3.25 million guaranteed."

Good! Now we have 3 TEs that I feel good about.

I'm not sure about this. Hill did not show up last year. Hopefully he doesn't cut into Fleener's snaps.

Maybe Sean knows a thing or two about offense. We now have 3 pretty good TE's on the roster. I'm OK with that.

Maybe we didn't need Hill as much since Watson had his best year in a long time?

I thought he hit his ceiling and physically he didn't offer that much when teams game planned against him.

He didn't do anything with what he was offered up last year early on. I mean are we seriously going to use Fleener like the colts did so he can drop crucial passes? I want Fleener to have volume.

It's put up or shut up for the offense next year. And with that schedule I'm nervous.

I'm confused. Are you talking about Fleener or Hill?

Re: Josh Hill

I mean Fleener shared snaps with Allen which many on here said led to his dropped passes. If Hill is more involved than last year then that's likely the case and it will be perceived another BUST signing.

Why do people keep saying fleener dropped a ton of passes? He had one of the best catch to drop ratios in the nfl.

He had a much better ratio than Watson did, with the Colts QB struggle last year even...

Because its the popular thing to say about a TE or WR without having a clue if its true or not. Often based on one play in one game.

Ask the Colts' fans; Fleener dropped some crucial drive extending drives and red zone opportunities...

Colston dropped a couple of those the last two seasons and that seems to be that all some Saints fans remember...

Hoping Da Mullet can be more clutch and be more successful...

When exactly did Hill and Graham tear it up together? I'm not being sarcastic, I'm seriously asking. Hill has done virtually nothing by any logic I can think of. I don't get what the point is of continuing to kick this proverbial can down the road.

I don't think Hill has done much from a catching standpoint, I can' speak of what else he brings to the table. I do remember him making some plays on ST, however.

I agree though, I don't remember them both having like 50-70 catches one season. Thought the same when I read it!

So we now draft a TE in the first?

Re: Saints match Chicago Bears’ offer, retain tight end Josh Hill

I agree we have not really seen that much from Hill. SP really sang His praised last year and Hill's contributions did not amount to much. He looks slow to me and not a type that can evade tacklers. I would like to see Him do well but I don't really get why SP is so high on Him. Verdict for me is hope for the best.

2014; Graham would draw coverage and Hill ended up with 5 TD passes...

Literally makes no sense. Mickey Loomis' decision-making ability has been dumpster fire status for several years now.

Lets recap...

Matching the offer actually saved us cap space over the tender.
He's a redzone threat, and a good pass catching TE.
He's an excellent special teams player.
He's still very young and developing.
We signed him for back-up TE money.

What exactly doesn't make sense to you?

Yes. GRAHAM drew the coverage away from Hill. And Hill had, I believe, 7 total catches that year. How is that tearing it up? Anyone could have had those 5 touchdowns, when he was left alone.

Re: Saints match Chicago Bears’ offer, retain tight end Josh Hill

Hill needs to re-prove himself. I don't want to lose games next year because of dropped passes and incompletions again.
