Buccaneers' cap limbo will be costly; more veterans dumped

Pro Football Weekly asks Jeff Reynolds for this thoughts on the NFL's hottest topics.

GM Allen, Bucs continue robbing Peter to pay Paul

A few Buccaneers, including Super Bowl winning QB Brad Johnson, already have been thrown overboard as Tampa Bay, for the third consecutive season, is forced to release higher-salary players and other veterans to reach compliance with the NFL's salary cap. General manager Bruce Allen spent a good deal of time at the Scouting Combine working with player agents to reduce and re-work contracts that alleviate some of the $18 million excess. Signing QB Brian Griese and releasing Johnson will reduce that number to around $11.8 million. Tougher cuts lie ahead.

PFW: What will be the most difficult cut for the Buccaneers to make?

Reynolds: Fortunately for Allen, who had to release S John Lynch last offseason, the team was able to spare Derrick Brooks, whose ties with the community are deep-rooted. But, according to one Buccaneers official, you can expect a great deal of backlash to come this week with the release of Pro Bowl CB Ronde Barber. Barber twice refused cuts, the Bucs say, and he will pay with his job.

There is a standing history in Tampa Bay of even the most respected veterans making salary concessions. Barber, perhaps seeing this as his last best chance to sign a big contract, wanted no part of a pay reduction. The Buccaneers are hoping to make one last-ditch effort to Barber before tonight's midnight deadline. Other key personnel, including FB Mike Alstott and DT Booger McFarland, fresh off a $32 million extension last offseason, have been negotiating restructured contracts.

If the pieces fall as Allen predicted in free-agency meetings, there will be at least four other veterans to hit the pavement in addition to Johnson and Barber. "The bad thing," said the source, "is we have to cut some people who can play football. Our challenge then is to find players who can fill those spots, but we may have no choice but to do so in this draft (rather than) free agency."

Joe Jurevicius just walked the plank, too...

I don\'t give a rip for Johnson, but Barber and Jurevicius are interesting prospects.

I remember reading a story about Jurevicius ( i think) loosing his baby during the superbowl or around that same time..very very class guy.

I would pick him up in a second.

Unless we are playing tons of Cover two, I don\'t want Barber. HE is a good CB in that system. And Juri is slow. If we can get Barber at a decent price, i\'d take him. But I would prefer a true \"man\" corner(notice I didn\'t say ahut down).

I also noticed in another article they released Mario Edwards and Ian gold as well. I didnt see anything about Barber getting cut, but it does sound VERY interesting to me. Heres the article I was talking about:

Buccaneers release QB Johnson, WR Jurevicius

TAMPA, Florida - As expected, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers have gotten rid of Super Bowl-winning quarterback Brad Johnson.

Advertisment

The Buccaneers on Tuesday released four players, including Johnson, who led them to a victory in Super Bowl XXXVII over the Oakland Raiders.

Johnson, 36, signed with the Buccaneers as a free agent in 2001 and led them to a Super Bowl title the following year, passing for 3,049 yards and 22 touchdowns with six interceptions for a rating of 92.9.

In 2003, Johnson set career-highs with 3,811 passing yards and 26 touchdowns, but was intercepted 21 times.

The Bucs recently restructured the contract of quarterback Brian Griese, paving the way for them to cut Johnson.

Griese, 29, started 10 games last season and ranked third in the NFC with a passer rating of 97.5. He completed 69 percent of his passes for 2,632 yards and 20 touchdowns with 12 interceptions. Chris Simms will likely serve as the backup to Griese.

Also Tuesday, the Buccaneers released receiver Joe Jurevicius, cornerback Mario Edwards and linebacker Ian Gold.

Johnson and Jurevicius are both very interesting prospects for the Saints. Johnson may be a stretch b/c there are places he can probably still start (and we all know that papa Haslett is gonna look out for baby Brooks in NO). Jurevicius would be nice. Probably also unlikely, b/c I can\'t see a new contract for him costing less this season than Pathon\'s $2.7 Million number...

besides, both are on the wrong side of the ball.
