What the hell is the hold up on Brees? None of this would be necessary if a damn contract could be agreed upon.

In fact all this tells me is that negotiations are stale.

Ive been thinking the same thing. What could the hold up be? I hope it is just the minor details. If he is the hold up I say let this play out this year and franchise him next year for the 40 million. Then, trade him for a few picks. Do I want this? Heck no but I also don't want a qb that would rather hurt the team due to his contract than make a little less money. Now, lets pray he is our QB the next 5 years.

Of course I can't see the overall picture at once like Loomis can so I am doing my best to trust that this won't end in another cap mess down the road.

The cap is projected to continue rising at a frenetic pace over the near future. Loomis is brilliant. Push costs to future periods where those cost are reflected in as a much smaller percentage of an increasing revenue source. I would be curious as to how many other GM's are degree holding accountants as is Loomis?

And I'm sure he's been given the order to "win while we have Brees".

I have no problem with him bumping the cap and kicking costs down the road evry year while we have Brees.

Our Brees window has about 2 or 3 more years. Make it happen NOW!!! Its why we've probably over-spent on several players.

Once Brees retire we'll have a pant load of cap room.

This isn't really a restructure for Brees. This is the next contract.

This is an extension for new money. New money in a world where elite QBs are making salaries north of $22 million a year.

So it's not just as simple as shuffling some salary dollars into signing bonus dollars and spreading the salary over the remaining years.

Think about what Brees could get in free agency next year if he were on the open market. And forget franchising him because it'll cost the Saints $40+ for a single year to do so.

So if you are Loomis and Tom Condon comes in asking for a 4 year $92 million extension with a $40 million signing bonus, you may have to pause and evaluate the relative value of such an extension.

And don't be foolish and think that Brees cannot get his owed $20 million this year and have some team offer him a 4 year $100 million, $60 million in guarantees, with $50 million given to him as soon as he signs the contract next year.

So it may be a case of not having the option of a reasonable set of numbers but simply not seeing the value of the market rate.

Makes for tough sledding.

Not sure why some people are surprised by Loomis's tactics and strategy. He has always done this and thats why we are in the predicament that we are in. I agree w Danno that he is being told to win NOW while we still have Brees performing at a high level. But even from the beginning, he has always leveraged the future for the present. Hey if we can win another SB in the next few years, who cares what our cap space looks like in 2019. What we need now is a solid O-Line to protect Brees because our best chances of winning is to outscore our opponents. Offense wins championships in NOLA lol

Yep, another great season from Brees and his market value is top 5 QB worthy of a 3 to 5 year contract at about 25 million per season, especially if he continues to show no sign of decline.

The only leverage we have is that he wants to stay here. Thats maybe worth a measly couple million per season, but thats still a whopping huge contract.

I agree. Why isn't the one big contract being addressed. Why cause unnecessary headaches with little contracts?
