Defensive tackle remains an option for Saints in Round 1 of NFL draft

Thanks for submitting your New Orleans Saints questions to me on Twitter. Send 'em anytime @MikeTriplett. Here’s this week's Question of the Week:

@MikeTriplett: I understand your thinking. The Saints certainly don't have to reach to draft a defensive tackle in Round 1 since the depth is so good at that position. But stupid to draft a DT in Round 1? No way.

New Orleans should draft its highest-graded player at No. 12 -- as long as it's not a running back, quarterback, tight end or offensive tackle. All defensive positions should be on the table.

http://usatq.files.wordpress.com/201...g?w=1000&h=666

At No. 12, the Saints should be able to land a future Pro Bowler that they can build their future around. They don't want to get too cute and eliminate the entire DT group from their Round 1 draft board -- especially since that group includes six or seven potential first-round picks.

Who do yall think the best DT in the draft is? I mean all around, not just pass rush or just run stuff.

I'm gonna take a guess and go with Sheldon Rankins.

Reed has my vote. Is it really a reach if in three years you made the right pick? hmmmmmm

The player to build around I got to go with Reed also but with what we have now I got to go with Robinson. I also like the Penn State guy in the 2nd.

Reed or Robinson.

I heard at the other forum, someone who is friends with a NFL scout said the saints wanted Cravens in the second round. Another said they knew another scout that said saints were wanting Robinson hard.

I guess this means we won't be getting a impact receiver then if that's true.

As long as he isn't a bust like Sedrick Ellis, I'm good with any of the DT's.

If we are truly considering DT a #1, it actually might make sense to drop back 5-6 spots an grab another pick

With Miami at 13 now I am thinking the trade up bait will be a CB. CB is odds on favorite to be the position Miami will draft. Oakland needs CB also so a swap from 12 to 14 would be nice.

The saints would pick up a 4th and a 5th to drop down to 14. Good new the Raiders have multiple picks in the 5th. so the math lines up. what CB at 12? Eli Apple?

If WR was your pick you are still on top of the next group of teams that appear to be looking at WR in round 1.

Plus this year I think rounds 3 thru 5 does not have a huge drop in talent.

i call it a win win

This is absolutely brilliant and the right move...Every draft has an ebb, flow re: value and at No. 12 we're not getting full value with any DL not named Bosa or Buckner...

Are there that many DTs that are first round picks? Yes. Should we pick one at 12, in this draft? No.

If we could move back in the first, gain a top 75 pick, and select LaTech's Vernon Butler - that would be a Jedi move...

Moving back and still taking, say, a top five CB or maybe Jarran Reed, Kevin Dodd would also be stealthy, something I'd expect from Payton/Ireland...

Just really don't want us taking some overrated defender like Sheldon Rankins or Asean Robinson or a lightweight Ohio St LBer at No. 12...

Mickey Loomis, Is Dat You?!? Quit giving it away sweetie! Why not wrap a bow on it and ask for a ring?!?

Somebody please tell Ireland no bathroom breaks during the draft!!!

Let's call Detroit for a round 3 pick or Buffalo for a round 2 pick, if we're to swap...

Defensive Tackle or End is our only option. Shoring up the D Line makes our Secondary so much better.

Ellis wasn't a bust. Johnathon Sullivan was a bust.

People use the term "bust" way too often.

Reed or Robinson in my book. I'm just hoping that their play was not great because of the other player right next to them. I would play the safe hand and go with V. Butler.

I think Butler from La. Tech is going to be a great player. I would love to trade back a few, pick up a draft pick or two and steal him. Dodd may be drafted in the top 15 or he may fall into the 2nd. This draft is screwed up. So much talent on the defensive front 7. No one will know until pick 12 is turned in.

Alabama defensive players have a proven track record in the NFL. These guys simply produce at the next level.

I'd feel completely comfortable & confident with either of these guys being selected at #12.
