New Orleans Saints sign Griffin Neal as their fourth quarterback
1 Attachment(s)
The New Orleans Saints have signed quarterback Griffin Neal, according to his college coach Terry Horan and multiple reports.
Neal, 6-4 and 220 pounds, played college football for Division III Concordia College in Moorhead, Minn. He was not drafted in 2015 (and did not appear on the NFLPA's draft-eligible list) and spent the 2015 season in Germany playing for the Hildesheim Invaders of the semi-professional German Football League. http://image.nola.com/home/nola-medi...703-mmmain.jpg According to the Fargo Valley News in North Dakota, Neal drew the eyes of coaches when he attended Tulane's Pro Day at the Saints facility in March. He was offered a tryout on April 8 and signed a three-year rookie contract the same day. Neal played four seasons for the Cobbers, completing 402-of-631 passes (63.7 percent), for 5,614 yard and 47 touchdowns, all school records. He played in 34 games and started his final 30 games. He rushed for 1,331 yards and 22 touchdowns. Neal was named all-conference in the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference three times. read more Former Concordia QB Neal signs three-year contract with New Orleans Saints | INFORUM Most likely a camp arm but the 3 year contract is surprising. I have no idea who this is. |

6'4 220 is pretty big

Re: New Orleans Saints sign Griffin Neal as their fourth quarterback
Sounds like he made an impression. Well I guess we won't be picking a QB in the draft. Not that I thought that was necessary anyway.

Re: New Orleans Saints sign Griffin Neal as their fourth quarterback
I'd like to see him in the preseason, if he makes it that far... Could be interesting
|
Re: New Orleans Saints sign Griffin Neal as their fourth quarterback
I'm guessing his 3-year contract in contingent on making the team?
I think some people are reading too much into this. It will probably take a couple of seasons for him to become an NFL back-up, if he ever does. |
Re: New Orleans Saints sign Griffin Neal as their fourth quarterback
Maybe...
But it is an interesting signing. |

Re: New Orleans Saints sign Griffin Neal as their fourth quarterback
Stats are insane- 30 passing TD's, 25 rushing
why we thought we needed to sign him now is the real mystery |
Re: New Orleans Saints sign Griffin Neal as their fourth quarterback
Drafted a QB last year.
Signed a project QB this year. May draft a QB this year as well. It's clear Sean Payton wants to have options once Brees finally decides to hang up his cleats. |
Re: New Orleans Saints sign Griffin Neal as their fourth quarterback
Seems like the Rams once signed an extra arm for training camp from the NFL Europe Amsterdam team...
Kid from Northern Iowa Univ, had tried out for Green Bay who already had Brett Favre and Ty Detmer, stocked grocery store shelves while playing some ball in the ArenaFootball League, found his way with the Lord, gets signed by the Rams, allocated to NFL-Europe... His big break came as an unfortunate break, tear for starter Trent Green during training camp; and then suddenly Kurt Warner stepped up and seized the moment... If the Saints' success under Coach Payton has taught us anything, it's not how you get here, but what you do with the opportunity... Just ask Marques Colston (nearly Mr. Irrelevant), Pierre Thomas, Tim Lelito, Khiry Robinson...Anyways, you get the idea... |

Agreed that he's probably just a warm body. But JP nailed it with the Kurt Warner example. If you dig deep enough and look under every rock you're eventually gonna find something special. Not saying this guy is it, but on the other hand..hell, why not? |
Re: New Orleans Saints sign Griffin Neal as their fourth quarterback
This is quite an intriguing signing. But the article has an error. The Hildsheim Invaders didn't play in the GFL last year but in the GFL2 which is Germanys second division. The team won and moved up to GLF this year.

Kidding aside, we're gonna have to get a Football Europe Group going so you can educate us on where the state of the game is there without the Goodell, League filter... |

Here's a good read on him.

Re: New Orleans Saints sign Griffin Neal as their fourth quarterback
Gave him another 30 minute session right after Tulane's pro day, gave him a portion of the playbook to learn, and signed him to a three year deal after Friday's pro day and before the rookie minicamp...
He's gotta be more than just a camp arm... :saintsfan: |

I'm always a sucker for the underdog.

“Concordia is a triple-option team,” Carpenter said. “Literally. Like, old-school Oklahoma, like back in the day with Barry Switzer.” Actually I heard about this kid. Typical Upper Midwestern scandi. BIg smart and surprisingly very athletic. Lets be honest upper mid west is not known for overly athletic white boys. Heck put a horned helment on the kid and he could stand in for the show the Vikings. The biggest knock besides level of comp was the system he was in. I would rather start working with a triple option QB than these spread offense types. At least they have a complete read progression. So any ways he goes to the Hildesheim Invaders works on three- and five-step drops. learning defensive fronts, blitzes, pass protections, coverages, route combinations. Actually I never considered him then as anything more than a UDFA camp arm in 2014 and I completely forgot about him. I can not wait for camp and see what this kid has done to his game. You never know we may have signed a poor man version of Paxton Lynch but with a year or two camp under his belt. Been a while since I had a camp underdog at QB to cheer for. |
Re: New Orleans Saints sign Griffin Neal as their fourth quarterback
Why did he play at a D-3 school. Camp arm. Oh, Good Luck.
|
Re: New Orleans Saints sign Griffin Neal as their fourth quarterback
Kurt Warner was a 'camp arm' at some point wasn't he? I mean I think he was back then.
Anyway, you gotsta look under all those rocks. |
Re: New Orleans Saints sign Griffin Neal as their fourth quarterback
Passed over. Motivated. Gets to work with Brees and Payton.
|
Re: New Orleans Saints sign Griffin Neal as their fourth quarterback
Don't forget to throw Jake Delhomme and Marc Bulger in the "Camp Arm" column too!
Griffin? First name on the back? I'm sure there are lot's of Griffin jerseys around! |
Re: New Orleans Saints sign Griffin Neal as their fourth quarterback
Concordia is in Moorehead and not that far from Fargo really. Plus it is an excellent school in owns right.

Re: New Orleans Saints sign Griffin Neal as their fourth quarterback
Drew better sign his contract fast.........
|
Re: New Orleans Saints sign Griffin Neal as their fourth quarterback
He may have a real chance and if he could be like Bree's at his height and power something for Carolina and all the rest to take notice of. A white Cam Newton? After all Purdue is not what I call a powerhouse football team or program.

Re: New Orleans Saints sign Griffin Neal as their fourth quarterback
Well he worked out / tryied out and so obviously there is something they liked.
I don't think you sign a 4th QB at this point in the season. You keep that open for the draft in case you land even an un drafted QB. Unless it is a ploy that the Saints are drafting one of the QB's in round 1. And if it is then is a beauty. |
