Oh settle down folks. I think Jenkins/Davison at the nose with Fairley/Rankins at the 3 technique is pretty good. We'll grab a DE, WR and guard too before the draft is over.

He's a big run stuffer. I don't have a prob with the pick.

Jeff Ireland sucks. He got run off as GM for a reason. I read, don't post / troll a lot of other teams around the league's boards and they hated Ireland in Miami. I don't know why we hired this guy.

Spike, the only salve I can find in all this right now is that it didn't cost us more than one pick...

Well, it's Hurricanes tonight, Boys!!!

Rankins' size seems like somewhat of a weakness, but on the other hand, he can get leverage under guards and centers.

Ireland isn't the GM here and didn't scout in Miami.

Re: 2016 Saints Draft Live Discussion Thread

sorry Tunsil drops into your lap and pass for a 3 tech DT? which we have plenty of. needs trumps BPA I have 6 or 7 players ranked higher. desperation media hyped pick in my book.

Oh well lets see what happens. we still need a 3 down NT that is not scheme dependent to make this pick work. Never mind we are scheme dependent with this pick. Those are few and far in between in this draft.

I am back to oh well here we go again. sit back and see what happens.

If we do it better be a NT to even have a chance of making this pick work. right now he will get double teamed right out of the dome.

Ireland was responsible for last years draft which was our best since 06, but please continue to talk out of your ass. I guess everyone is entitled to their opinions.

Rankins is the safe pick, not the sexy one. However, he could be outstanding at the DT position as he as the perfect size for it. The biggest issue for DTs is standing too tall, if you have played ball before you'll remember the saying low man always wins. Ranking being 6'1 gives him an edge at being the low man without having to work for it.

For those that wanted Treadwell... lol, let's just draft all offensive players and let the UDFAs run the D.

At least we stayed on defense...and on the line where we need help the most. I'm not disappointed with the pick...he a good character guy too...and you know how Sean likes those. lol

We had exactly one 3 technique before this pick in Nick Fairley. Were you expecting Fairely to play every single snap every game?

Agreed. Fairley is a rotational player at best at this time in his career. No way he's playing every down. NO WAY.

12. New Orleans Saints: Sheldon Rankins, Defensive Tackle, Louisville

12. New Orleans Saints: Sheldon Rankins, Defensive Tackle, Louisville
Throughout this draft coverage, we'll pepper Saints defensive selections with carefully-curated Random Depressing Saints Defensive Stats.

Random Depressing Saints Defensive Stat #2043B: The Saints allowed 129.4 rushing yards per game last season (31st) in the NFL and 4.9 yards per rushing attempt.

Luckily this is the best defensive tackle draft in years. It's so good, and defensive tackles are so hard to keep straight, that Bleacher Report proudly presents this year's first installment of Big Uglies: a 2016 Field Guide. Don’t try to tell one monstrous interior lineman from another without it!

A quick Rankins primer ...

Size: 6-foot-1, 299 pounds.

Athleticism: This dude moves like a 210-pound safety.

Honors: All-ACC selection.

Numbers: Seven sacks in 2015.

Defining Special Trait: Exceptional first step quickness and fluidity.

Potential Flaws: Smaller than the prototype.

Also Worth Mentioning: Obliterated every blocker he faced in Senior Bowl practices.

Rankins looked like Aaron Donald’s twin brother at the Senior Bowl and could be a special player, though nitpickers warn that he lacks a counter move as a pass rusher and may not be built to bulk up to the 310-pound range without sacrificing quickness. Nitpickers sometimes mix old-fashioned analysis-paralysis with let’s pour ice water all over this prospect who is slaughtering offensive linemen in front of 500 reporters so we sound extra-discerning ulterior motives. Rankins can start in the NFL; the details are what will decide if he develops into a Pro Bowler.

The Saints will be easy to grade this year. Every time they pick a solid defensive player, they get a reward. Grade: A

that statement alone worries me in a draft with sub par interior lineman

holds no weight in my book

but oh well lets see
