PANCAKES: Saints Rookie’s Unique Ability Makes Him a Favorite at Guard Spot
When the Saints signed University of North Carolina Tarheels right guard Landon Turner in undrafted free agency after the conclusion of the 2016 NFL Draft two and a half weeks ago, they surely were aware of the 23-year old rookie’s ability to “pancake” opponents.
Wait a minute — do what??? The “pancake block” is a term that is used by offensive line coach and offensive linemen in football to describe a block that leaves a defensive player flat on his back as the running back goes through the hole. ![]() The pancake block is a maneuver that isn’t very popular with most defensive football players. Defensive players hate the pancake bitterly, and will do almost anything within their power to avoid being on the receiving end of one of them. For the offensive linemen, however, the pancake block is the ultimate expression of blocking dominance.
