Saints are suffocating themselves by clinging to Drew Brees

this is a discussion within the Saints Community Forum; He's right if this D don't get fixed. 30 million is a lot to play any player if the team finished at 7-9 for 2 years straight. At 38 this would be the last season I would pay. I don't ...

How is he right if the D doesn't get fixed? Drew wouldn't be the reason our defense wouldn't get fixed.

Drew hasn't stopped us from signing or drafting anyone who would be that difference maker on defense.

Tell that to Dennis Allen when he was pushing for Josh Norman.

Forget that. This is a highly inappropriate comment.

I did tell him that, and he agreed with me.

We offered Norman the same deal, and he opted for the dysfunctional Redskins. It wasn't money

Brees' contract didn't have any negative impact on pursuing Josh Norman. None whatsoever. Both Brees and Payton said that a restructure would have occurred right away if Norman became available. He never got out of Washington so the point was moot.

The defense went from 31st to 4th in a year from 2012 to 2013. And honestly any team that can win 7 games with the historically worst defense doesn't really need the defense to get too much better to be successful.

First off it isn't $30 million. Brees' salary this year is $20. Barely top 10 salary for QB's in today's NFL. The $30 million cap hit is because of the signing bonus from the 2012 extension along with the 2014 restructure.

It's foolish to think the Saints have not gotten every penny of the $100 million that was committed to Brees for his 5 year extension in 2012. Looking at the production and salaries of other NFL QBs, it's a flat bargain.

I posit there are teams that would be willing to pay Brees $75 million all cash for 3 years.

But the problem falls squarely back on the Saints. The next QB will not be Drew Brees. Not even close. Not better than Drew Brees at 40, or 41 either.

So a decision has to be made. Try to reach the mountaintop again in a short window with Brees, or start over.

Super Bowl Championships: New Orleans Saints:1, Carolina:0, Atlanta Chokers: STILL ZERO

Only Atlanta choked in an unchokable situation... Life is definitely good.
