Re: Here's what a Drew Brees extension can look like and what concerns the Saints
The longer the season goes on the more it will show how Brees is doing. Taking hits, shoves, sacks, etc. adds up in time. I would not give him a 3 or 4 year deal, a 2 year extention, maybe. His worth will be how he plays (all) season and how well we do as a team over all. If we win 7-9 games I don't know if I would not go ahead and try rebuild with a different qb. I see no reason to pay 1 player top tier pay when the team is overall less than a true playoff contender or on the edge of being one. This season will tell alot.

Re: Here's what a Drew Brees extension can look like and what concerns the Saints
Brees has shown no signs of slowing so that arguement is not valid. If the Saints let Brees walk it is only because neither wanted to budge. For the love of God give the man 4 years at 80 million. He is worth every penny and next year we will have the cap room to give him some defensive help.

Expect the Brees camp to ask for four (4) guaranteed years... |

Now certainly the Saints can decide that they cannot afford that type of investment. And that's fine. But to think of offering Brees a 2 year extension at $50 million when the market will offer $100 million for 4 years and thinking he would consider it is nuts. I hope the Saints are a class enough organization not to insult Brees' intelligence after all he has done for the organization. Quote:
Offer a market value extension (4 years, $100 million, $60+ million guaranteed), or plan on drafting or paying the money to a different free agent QB. Those are the options. There really are no others. SFIAH |
Re: Here's what a Drew Brees extension can look like and what concerns the Saints
The other side of Drew's value is the amount of Fans he brings into the stadium.
You can count on a very slippery slope if he's not in B&G. On that miserable Redskin game last season when we got hammered two things were memorable. It was the last game we had to deal with the Rougarou. Second was the amount of Brees Jerseys folks were wearing all around me at an away game. So there's the bargaining chip win or lose Fans are paying to see Mr. Brees. $$$$$$ |

And there you have it, Condon/Brees camp wants more guaranteed money than the Saints are currently willing to commit...

Here's what a Drew Brees extension can look like and what concerns the Saints
...two league sources pegged a Brees extension as landing somewhere in the neighborhood of four years and $95 million to $100 million, with guaranteed money likely to exceed $65 million... ...The upcoming season's $30 million cap charge for Brees is no longer a pressure point for the Saints... ...One source familiar with the Saints' line of thinking said there is a wild card in play: guaranteed money. There is a looming possibility that Brees could have an expeditious decline in play, potentially as soon as next season... ...This has given the Saints plenty to think about – and at least some additional motivation to let Brees play out his contract through next season...would also give New Orleans another season to eye options for Brees' potential successor. Garrett Grayson was drafted in the third round in 2015 to potentially be that player. But heading into Year 2, the Saints still don't know whether he is capable of rising to that expectation. Part of the problem could be the quarterback room that Grayson is sitting in. Grayson needs to master the New Orleans offense in two ways: through work in the classroom and reps on the field, a league source said. But that has been harder than it sounds. Why? Grayson is sitting in a classroom with Brees and backup Luke McCown...While Grayson is still learning many of the basic ins and outs of the offense, Brees and McCown are operating at an advanced pace in meetings. As a result, the Saints coaching staff is facing a situation where it has become necessary for quarterbacks coach Joe Lombardi to spend additional time with Grayson 1-on-1 in hopes of teaching him basics that Brees and McCown have long mastered...
