Brandon Coleman not safe!

ESPN Saints reporter Mike Triplett suggests Brandon Coleman's roster spot isn't assured.

Triplett writes "Coleman will need a strong preseason to secure his roster spot" after the Saints used a second-round pick on Michael Thomas, who is a similar style of player but far more talented. Triplett's statement is particularly notable because another Saints beat writer recently suggested Coleman was the favorite for the "big slot" role over Thomas. That never seemed likely.

Agree, We will likely only keep 5.

With Harris coming on strong and Cooks, Snead guaranteed spots...

1. Cooks
2. Snead
3. Thomas

That leaves 2 spots for the final 5. Those spots typically are filled with WR's who play ST's. Coleman doesn't.

So he's competing with veteran Vincent Brown and upstart RJ Harris.

I still think he has the inside track, but he'd better turn it up a notch.

I agree with ya Danno but I don't know who I'd rather have at this point, Brown, Harris or Coleman. Like you said he better step it up because Harris is hungry and Brown is a vet that knows the game.

Just glad that we have a good competition at WR. Harris has a good deal of buzz. It is a little early to make these calls. We'll find out more as training camp opens and preseason games play out. Can't wait.

Re: Brandon Coleman not safe!

I think Coleman is a lock, just on his size alone.

Coleman 6'6"
Thomas 6'3"
Fleener 6'6"

Good luck defending that in the redzone :bng:

the saints wont keep 6?

WR is all up in the air and young so if the talent is there why not?

Coleman will be my surprise cut.

If we circle back to the end of last season, Cadet was lined up as a WR (was productive) & has the ability to play special teams making BC expendable in my opinion.

Competition is good.

A bit early for me on this one. This will probably answer itself weeks from now. I never rule out 6 wr's on this team because....Payton.

The trends over the last decade would indicate that Coleman either takes a major step forward in year 3, or he really never will.

I really hope no player is safe in training camp. Best player makes the roster, names shouldn't mean anything.

That said, I think Coleman will make the team, if that means the Saints carry 6 WR's, I think they will.

We have before, but we had a pretty solid O-line the too. I'm afraid our questions along the O-line will require us to keep an extra OL or two. That spot will rob us of that 6th WR or that 5th RB, or 3rd TE, or 3rd QB.

Re: Brandon Coleman not safe!

we've often kept only 2 qb's, i can see that as a real possibility again

in the past no one wanted our third so we could stash him on the PS. We won't be able to do that this year, so if GG is not ready to backup Brees we'll need to carry 3.

It will be a lot easier to keep the FA o-linemen on the practice squad, as someone signing one of them without seeing them in camp would be a real reach

I'm hoping Greyson takes a huge step forward so we could carry only 2. I don't think we could stash him either.

Coleman is about as safe as Cadet. Maybe a little safer. It will all come down to the level of competition at training camp.

Harris could slide to PS no problem, and no one really wanted Brown, so I don't think we are in much danger if we play the cut and sign game with them.
Coleman might be more attractive.
I think since he was the go to guy last game of the year that SP sees something

Good. Means we are strong at that position.

I agree. It took Meachem 3 years to be any good and if Coleman can't do it this year then it's next man up.

I was just rereading some camp reports and they mentioned that he caught a long bomb from Drew to close out the practice. It's something I guess. I'm still pulling for him........for now anyway.
