2009 assessing
Detroit week 1
With so much fuss about the defense helping Drew and the run game. I decided to look back at 2009. Week 1, we got two turnovers. Only one resulted in points. The biggest thing I looked at was the special teams play that could get us to the 40 yard line. Nonetheless Drew put up back to back 60 yard drives to go up 14-0. Then when we were starting further back we punted back to back. And then Drew turned it over. The good thing is Drew attempted a hail mary and it got picked off in the endzone(and it was the as usual inconsistent Henderson who was not good at making TD catches like that but stretching the field). However, the lions took over at a usual position after a punt or kickoff return. Then the saints put together a long drive, and then another one at the 40 when Drew was throwing non stop. As for the running game it was no different than last year. Brees was still in many crucial third downs where often receivers would not make plays to stay on the field. However, we had talent then and Shockey and Henderson were the main third down conversion recepients. Of course we had Mike Bell doing all of the ground work with Reggie sprinkled in. I however did see quit a bit of 1-3 yard runs from them which shows the passing game was still the decider. Brees threw six TDs in this game. As for defense, Sharper got two ints neither were TDs. And neither resulted in points. We did well defensively against Detroit but because of the fast paced offense we gave them too much breathing room. We allowed 20 offensive points to them. I will look at eagles next. |
