The Saints nearly brought Reggie Bush back a year ago.

But while New Orleans coach Sean Payton is sure his former running back will be back in the league this year, it won’t be with his team.

Payton said during an interview on the “Rich Eisen Show” that he and Bush met for dinner last offseason in Los Angeles, but the Saints couldn’t strike a deal and added C.J. Spiller instead.

“It almost happened a year ago,” Payton said, via the New Orleans Times-Picayune. “We actually had dinner out here. It got close and never finalized itself. I’m sure he’s going to play this year.”

Payton said he didn’t think the Saints had room for Bush now, given recent additions.

Behind starter Mark Ingram, the Saints have oft-injured Spiller, reclamation project Tim Hightower, journeyman Travaris Cadet and a pair of seventh-round picks in Marcus Murphy and Daniel Lasco.

Bush remains a free agent, after tearing his ACL last year with the 49ers, when he slipped on the concrete outside the turf in St. Louis. The 10-year veteran played his first five years with the Saints. He’s said he has no intention to retire, and that he feels healthy now.

I loved him in black and gold and would welcome him back.

It would be cool if he could retire his last year or two in the NFL here. No doubt , his best years were here.

We might have actually won a few games if Dew had a solid scat back last year.

Sproles was the back Reggie wished he was, plus he can't stay healthy and still fumbles alot, nothing has changed since he was here.
