Smith will stay at safety
By Len Pasquarelli, ESPN.com

In a move that addresses one of their biggest defensive deficiencies, and which could precipitate a shakeup in their porous secondary, the New Orleans Saints on Monday reached a contract agreement with unrestricted free agent free safety Dwight Smith.

Smith, 26, was regarded by most teams as one of the top two safeties in the unrestricted pool. Although the former Tampa Bay starter said late in the 2004 season that he would like to return to cornerback, the position he played the first two years of his career, the Saints will definitely use Smith at safety.

The addition of Smith could result in the release of Tebucky Jones, a seven-year veteran New Orleans acquired from New England in a 2003 trade, but who Saints coaches and team officials feel has not made enough game-altering plays to warrant his big contract.

Why should we simply release T-buck? Let\'s trade him. Surely someone is looking for a tall, rangy FS? I suppose, they\'d have to take his ridiculous contract too?

Why not restructure his contract and have him play SS (or back up Bellamy)? At least he finally learned to tackle. Surely his speed could make him at least a special teams asset - especially if Gleason leaves?

What do you guys think?

Well....the only real possibilities would be,,

Trade him away for nothing...like a 7th rounder next year...

Bundle him in on the Howard trade...

Keep him to play backup...and S.T...maybe even move him in at SS...

I\'d rather cut him altogether and make a better offer to Gleason.

He\'s been consistent with those blocked punts.

Yes, that\'s the problem. And I don\'t know how many years his contract has left. They only way I could see him being traded is if the Saints managed to restructure his contract first, i.e. before any trade negotiations. Failing that, nobody will touch him.
