Re: Training Camp Day 4

I can see a situation developing where we break camp with five (5) cornerbacks not named Lewis (e.g. Del Breaux, P.J. Williams, Damian Swann, Brian Dixon and De'Vante Harris) and with Lewis being designated IR - to return...

This reminds me of Larry Bird running the bleachers after practice...

This is the type of character needed to mould a Championship Team...

Re: Training Camp Day 4

Underhill's Day 4 Observations:

Attendance: Safety Alden Darby (ankle) and offensive lineman Ryker Mathews (knee) were not present. Safety Erik Harris (hamstring), defensive tackle Nick Fairley (unknown) and tight end Michael Hoomanawanui (unknown) observed the session. Cornerback Keenan Lewis and offensive lineman Terron Armstead remain on the physically unable to perform list.

Practice difference: One interesting thing at practice has been the difference in positional drills with some new coaches on staff. The offensive line went through a half-line drill today with plays going off in rapid succession on each side of the field. This was a new wrinkle, and it seemed to be very efficient.

Rookie woes: David Onyemata showed off some of his rawness today during one-on-one pass-rush drills. The rookie from Canada had trouble with the snap count and jumped offsides several times. Being that he's fairly new to the game, it should be expected that he'll endure some growing pains.

Rankins effort: One of the better moments during practice came when Sheldon Rankins ran six or seven yards down the field to chase down a screen pass. If he hadn't gone after it, the play might have carried on for another 20 yards before someone caught up to it. The moment showed his motor and pursuit for the ball, which are quality traits to have on defense.

I like Lamp: One young player to keep an eye on is rookie wide receiver Jake Lampman. He's unheralded and unknown right now, but he's starting to rack up some targets and is making a positive impression on the coaching staff. He forced people to take notice today when he got behind the defense and reeled in a deep pass from Grayson.

Can't guard Mike: The Daily Mike Thomas Highlight wasn't as spectacular today, but he caught the eye when he broke a Vonn Bell tackle and turned up field for some yards after the catch. It's too soon to evaluate, but he also looked good during a drill when the receivers practiced their blocking.

Blitzed: The defense blitzed often on Sunday, and there were sacks were happening all over the field. Davis Tull, Obum Gwacham John Jenkins all recorded sacks, and there might have been some others. The quarterbacks faced a good amount of pressure and mostly did a good job of handling it.

No slipping: Daniel Lasco and Travaris Cadet both fumbled during an inside running drill. The battle at running back is tight, and while both players have had good moments, this is a competition where a lot of mistakes cannot be made.

Sneaded it: Willie Snead put together a nice pair of back-to-back plays when he broke by a safety and turned a short pass up field and then went up and high-pointed a pass on the sidelines with Damian Swann in coverage.

Cam looking sharp: Cam Jordan has been really impressive in one-on-one pass-rush drills, again dominating his reps. He also had a nice run stuff during the inside running drill. It doesn't look like he's suffered any attrition since a stellar 2015 season.

Rush drills: The most decisive wins during the one-on-one drill came from Jordan, Rankins, Kasim Edebali, Bobby Richardson and Davis Tull. Andrus Peat looked really good at tackle, holding up Gwacham a pair of times. Landon Turner also had a nice rep and later laid a key block on a Tim Hightower screen.

Brees passing: Drew Brees completed 13-of-16 passes. He targeted Willie Snead (4/4), Brandon Coleman (2/2), Colby Fleener (3/3), Brandin Cooks (0/3), Mark Ingram (3/3) and Tim Hightower (2/2). Cooks appeared to get banged up a little at one point but did not miss any time.

Grayson passing: Garrett Grayson completed 7-of-12 passes. He targeted Chris Manhertz (1/1), Brandon Coleman (2/3), Austin Johnson (0/1), Michael Thomas (0/1), Jake Lampman (1/1), Brandin Cooks (0/1), Hakeem Nicks (1/1) and Tommylee Lewis (1/1). Grayson threw an interception after Cooks slipped on his route. The pass to Thomas arrived after Brandon Dixon gave him a good push while they were in pursuit of the ball. Grayson threw away two passes.

McCown passing: Luke McCown completed 7-of-8 passes. He targeted Tommylee Lewis (2/2), Michael Thomas (1/1), Garrett Griffin (1/1), Hakeem Nicks (1/1), Reggie Bell (0/1), Daniel Lasco (1/1) and Chris Manhertz (1/1). The one incompletion was a dropped pass.
