Re: Saints tackle Andrus Peat is in shape and playing well at his second training camp

There is a reason why less athletic guys play on the interior instead of on the edge. As a tackle you have to protect a whole lot more space than what you do as a guard or center. You go up against guys that are very much faster than most DTs. As a OT you have to move backwards almost as fast as the DEs are moving forward. Its athletically demanding in a whole different way than the interior play that is a lot more about anchoring. I do however agree with your point about G/C and T engaging the defender in different ways. The interior dictates a lot more than what tackles do, but from personal experience I can say that it has very much to do with how you as a tackle plays the position. |

It was unfortunate that he came in out of shape after graduating from a college on the quarter system where he got to camp late. He looks really good this year and worthy of a first round pick from what I hear at training camp. He will be a stud on the O-line for years.......hopefully at RT not guard. He should be playing RT where he was drafted to play. Strief was supposed to groom him last year and prepare him to take over at RT while Strief played swing tackle. Instead Peat played all over the line because we are so thin and limited athletically at guard. With Armstead at LT.....Unger at Center.....and Peart at RT we have a great center tackle combo. The problem is Payton has gambled on UDFA's to fill the O-line for so long now that the lack of talent is evident at Guard. Lelito put one over on Payton and never developed into the potential Payton saw. Kelemete(Calamity) isn't getting it done either. Both were pulled for sloppy play last year and we still didn't draft or trade for a starting guard or two who could get the job done. Edit: Strief is not a guard. He is a serviceable tackle. Leave him where he is. |
