However, this year's*Saints*offense doesn't boast the same assured set of wideouts. Yes,Brandin Cooks*(84 rec, 1,138 yds, 9 TDs) remains the apple of Brees' eye, but behind him on the depth chart, there are a lot of question marks.

Agreed. Cooks, Snead, Thomas and Fleener sounds like a matchup problem for anyone.

No wait, we haven't played an entire season yet. We can't get excited. /sarcasm

Payton/Brees system makes average good and good great.
The ball gets spread around so much that it's hard to bolster individual numbers.
And that's the beauty of it. It promotes single covers and creates pockets in the zones.
Beautiful!
Most guys that leave this offense for so called pastures just disappear off the map.
A decent route runner that can "actually" catch the ball will do well in this offense.
Guys that can exploit mismatches will do extremely well.
I got spoiled with Brees throwing for nearly 5000+/- every year.
I was definitely worried about the state of our receiving corp.
Especially with the absence of a consistent running attack.
But now, not so much.

As long as we have Brees and a good, strong O-Line, it really doesn't matter who the receivers are.

That's a bit of a stretch. Brees has had very talented receivers during this 10 year run. And he has a talented group now.

I'm not saying that our receivers haven't been talented. My point is that the combination of Brees plus good protection is more important than the combination of Brees plus good receivers. When the protection is not there, it doesnt matter who the receivers are - our offense struggles. Brees makes our receivers better, and I don't think anyone can argue that point.
