Draft day trade or renegotiate and move to strong safety .

I\'d like to see him at SS. This would allow Smith to make plays rather than cover Brown and Bellamy\'s butts, since T-buck at least has the speed to look like he might make a play in space.
HOWEVER, he is too expensive for what he is. If he is unwilling to restructure, then cut him. |

Hopefully C.
and we get a Draft pick or something. It would be a waste to just cut him |

there comes a point where you just have to cut your losses..besides..noone would pay him what we are... His salary, and lack of production will lead to his downfall.. |

\"...deal will be for five years and worth $18.75 million, and it will make Jones one of the highest-paid safeties in NFL history. The contract will include a $5 million signing bonus and a second-tier option bonus of $1 million.\" If I\'ve got my math right, then his annual cap hit is roughly 3.75 mil per year. The bonus(es) prorate to 1.2 mil per year, and since there\'s 3 years left on the contract, we still have 3.6 mil of bonuses to account for. So.... it\'d be 3.75 mil to keep him, and 3.6 mil to release him. EDIT... Regarding June 1st... If we released him after June 1st, we get to stretch that cap hit (remember, we have paid him 6 mil in bonuses, and we need to account for that against the cap). If we cut after June 1st, then the normal prorate applies (for this year), and the remaining balance of those bonuses hit next year. So... if we release him after June 1st, it\'d be a cap hit of 1.2 mil this year (normal prorate), and 2.4 mil next year (remainder of bonuses). [Edited on 9/3/2005 by LordOfEntropy] |

Im sure this will draw a lot of criticism, but I think that Tebucky Jones can still be a player for the Saints. In his productive years in New England, he was surrounded by a defense and especially a secondary that allowed him to be the \"center fielder\" and the ballhawk that he is capable of being. I think that he is too busy playing as the last line of defense to be picking off passes at the same time. Hope you guys dont berate me too much for this one.

Welcome to the board BRSF!
I think T-buck is a solid player, actually; he is just WAY overpaid for what he can do. If he restructured dramatically, I have no problem keeping him. He is big, has decent speed (though often he misuses it), and he can tackle (finally). |

My question about the Safety situation is what will happen to Mel Mitchell. Dollars to donuts, you\'ll see Mel on the bus and T-Buck in Bellamy\'s spot. With Bellamy as a quality backup til retirement. :D |

With that in mind, I would take action as follows: 1) offer him a contract restructure - he\'s overpaid, regardless of how the cap numbers works out 2) if he accepts a restructure, then there are options - offer him as trade bait, or keep him as a starter or backup 3) if he does not take a restructure, he\'s doomed - draft or trade for another safety and cut him after June 1st, eat part of the cap hit this year, the rest of it next year Since I\'d like to see Thomas Davis in here anyway, T-Buck would end up nothing more than an -extremely- overpaid backup. Same applies if we end up with Darius. |
