I'm hoping for the same reason you are. We're trading for a stud player or two?

Fingers crossed.

The way I understand it is for 5 yrs but can (more than likely) be voided by either party after 2.

You can be sure ol' Rogey boy will be banning this practice soon. I believe this is the third contract they've done with the dummy years tacked on, Fairley and Kruger being the others. I think it's pretty brilliant, which is of course the very reason he'll outlaw it.

It gives flexibility. They may not be done making moves and anything not used get rolled into 2017 cap.

Its just strange they didn't do this sort of deal in March and get envoled in FA for some oline help

Not gonna complain yeah

Re: DREW BREES

I honestly hope they'll take part of this and give Delvin Breaux a raise. Nothing huge or anything, just add another year or two and maybe give him a nice signing bonus. The man has earned it and it would probably still be a bargain price for someone with his skill set.

Can someone explain something to me, it says the deal is worth 5 years but automatically voids to two?

So is it a 2 year contract or a 5 year contract?

The Dude 09-07-2016 03:45 PM

Re: DREW BREES

Trade bait? That contract looks very acceptable for a team who needs a QB but doesn't want to be obligated long term.

dizzle88 09-07-2016 03:48 PM

Re: DREW BREES

I've just read a little and it says if we want to move on after year 2, then we can just start a new with minimal cap implications which is very good.

If something bad happens i.e peyton mannings injury, then we can move on.

Very safe deal from all accounts, I just hope regardless that Brees retires a saint and doesn't play for another team.

It's essentially a 2 year deal and the extra 3 years are included in case we restructure his deal next year for whatever reason we'll be able to prorate the signing bonus over those extra years to spread it out. I think that's the case anyway. Basically it lets us spread money out if we restructure the deal in 2017.

No trade clause in deal

The contract reportedly includes a no-trade clause.

It also forbids the Saints from using the franchise tag on him. I don't really get that part since the Saints would only use the franchise tag after the first two years are up and since the contract (apparently) contains an automatic void after two years, the two parties wouldn't have a contract ... so the Saints could use the franchise tag since at that point there is no contract preventing it. (?)

I'm sure if it was the Giants or Ravens doing it then it would be no problem.

Re: DREW BREES

In 2 years the only teams that would touch him would be the win now crowd. If he can play another 2 years after that than we would have the best chance to retain him and he would have the best chance to win another Superbowl by staying with us! I love that no one is picking us to finish anywhere else but the bottom of the division. We are good at being the underdog. Gives us more to celebrate when we do win the Superbowl this year! Yes I said it and I won't take it back. We will beat the Kansas City Chiefs 35-17!!!!!!!!!

Anything left at the end of the season automatically rolls. Most teams usually have very little, but anything left goes.

I just don't understand the glass half empty posts.
I don't see how this could have gone better.
I imagine Ed McMahon showing up at some of these guys' doors with a million dollar check and these guys *****ing because they didn't win 10 million.
Whatever.

According to this the Jags carried over $32M from 2015, the Browns and the Titans $20M.
