So you want Mickey Loomis fired, huh?
Your spitfire and venom toward the longtime New Orleans Saints general manager came out loud and clear after the team released once-touted running back C.J. Spiller on Tuesday. The transaction represented another personnel fumble by the front office. Fans are fed up. Fans are calling for Loomis' head over the increasingly habitual misjudgments on players in the last couple of years. Save your breath. Loomis isn't going anywhere. I sat down with Saints owner Tom Benson for a candid interview in his office in late July at The Greenbrier during training camp. I asked Benson what was the most important thing he's done for this team's success during his 30-plus years of ownership. Without hesitation, Benson said, "Moving Mickey up to be the general manager." That's all you need to know about Loomis' job security. I know this fact won't sit well with some of you. In the terms of so many NFLers, it is what it is. So don't waste your energy calling for Loomis to be fired. What is more than fair is questioning the moves made by the Saints. Not only can you question them, but feel free to pan many of them. Loomis isn't oblivious to what's been happening. He's not above admitting the Saints have dropped the ball more often than not within free agency and in the NFL draft as opposed to hitting it big with picks and March acquisitions. The Saints GM isn't alone in making these personnel decisions. Sean Payton plays a very heavy role in this. A HEAVY role. read more |

Expect a flurry of Holder articles on how great the drafts were at the start. How great the finds of Snead/Armstead were (and they were). The man knows who puts the butter on his bread

Re: Fire Mickey Loomis? Don't waste your breath with the question
Th latest run on free agents has been abysmal to be sure. They're nothing like the guys we picked up towards the end of the 2000's. At least the Saints have been swinging and missing rather than not swinging at all.
Before Loomis, I spent my whole life wishing that the organization would at least try to bring in talented players to make the team better. Before Loomis, everyone considered Benson a cheap owner that didn't care about winning as long as he had a professional sports team to show off to the world. I really hope that Benson doesn't listen to the fans on this one. Keep the guy that helped bring a championship to a fan base that desperately needed it. |

Re: Fire Mickey Loomis? Don't waste your breath with the question
The Saints have some major issues with how the talent they are going after fits into what they are doing, and a lot of bad luck on top of that. I'm not ready to blame Loomis just yet, but something has to give. I think part of the problem in recent years was the roster was so loaded they could take chances in drafting players who weren't necessarily ready but had very high potential. As you all know now the roster isn't nearly as talented and a lot of those picks did not make it.

Re: Fire Mickey Loomis? Don't waste your breath with the question
Benson would say that Loomis is the best decision he has made, considering he fired Randy Mueller for no reason. No good reason, for sure.
He was the guy that brought in Jeff Blake, Joe Horn, Norman Hand, Charlie Clemons and Darrin Smith, among others, and drafted Darren Howard. Even Aaron Brooks was good for a little while, and Mueller got him for basically nothing. Those moves built that team that ended the playoff drought in 2000. He also later drafted Deuce and believed in him enough to trade Ricky Williams and flip him for what ended up being two first rounders. The new regime was responsible for squandering those. Heck, he and his staff even found Marc Bulger, who would become a pretty decent QB. Just not for the Saints. But he gets fired over Benson's ego, I guess, and up steps Mickey Loomis. The team proceeds to suck for another 4 years before Sean and Drew got here. They make a flurry of moves that bring surprising success, and in year four, after ups and downs, they win the Super Bowl. Awesome. Since '09, Other than bringing in Darren Sproles, and very few draft picks that would pan out, like Cam Jordan, they did little to add to that original core. We watched those guys get old or injured, and have now had 3 losing season in the last 4. The team went from finding guys off the radar and making a couple of semi-splash moves, to just trying to make the big splash moves and getting burned. What's my point? There was a small window of truly successful management and personnel decisions that fortunately, for all of us, led to a championship. Loomis and Payton have been far from geniuses in making any kind of decision. When Payton is on, he's one of the best offensive minds, no question. But he's got issues with evaluating talent, and Loomis isn't doing anything to help. He should have more knowledge to advise on such matters before he signs a check. |
If I had a nickel for every time I heard that, the NFL would fine and suspend me.
