AP reports the Saints entertained a pair of free agents -- former Tennessee Titans TE Shad Meier and RB Antowain Smith on Tuesday. The loss of OT Fred Miller to Chicago might be a blessing in disguise for the Saints. The contract for Miller with the Chicago Bears -- five years, $22.5 million -- likely would have taken a large chunk of the Saints' remaining salary-cap space, forcing them to make a roster cut or two before acquiring other players. Saints GM Mickey Loomis now has cap room to address depth-shy positions such as running back and tight end. Meier is the second veteran tight end to visit this week. Former Seattle TE Itula Mili visited Sunday. Smith, a native of Millbrook, Ala., and a former University of Houston standout, is one of three prospects the Saints have identified to back up RB Deuce McAllister. Former Chicago starter RB Anthony Thomas visited Sunday. RB Ron Dayne is coming in for a visit today.
I like Smith. Cheap, experienced, gets the job done. |

Im not sold on Antowain Smith. But from the visits of Smith and Dayne, it seems the Saints are looking for a bruiser in the backfield. However, I would consider grabbing one late in the draft. Some names that come to mind are Eric Shelton(might go earlier than we are ready), Kay Jay Harris, and TA Mclendon. The name that really stands out and who might be available in the latter rounds is Auburn transfer Brandon Jacobs. I want to say he is in the 260 range with decent speed for someone that size. Although not shifty, he can deliver a powerful blow more potent than either Dayne or Smith in my opinion.
