Drew's Extension

As I understand it Drew signed a five year deal which is really a two year deal with window dressing. Kind of like the Fairley deal. It is designed to make money available and then void the contract. I read somewhere the other day that Drew's two year deal is basically a one year extension and that he isn't committed but for one additional year. Please correct me if I am wrong.

It occurred to me just now(after several beers) that Drew is planning on playing football for several more years and is giving Payton and Loomis a chance to get this mess sorted out using the existing plan. If it doesn't work out then he could feasibly move on to a winner with Super bowl potential.

We keep hearing that Drew took a team friendly deal for two years which frees up money for the Saints to get back on track. I wonder if Drew has weighed his options and that is why he didn't sign a long term deal? Could he be giving the Saints time and money enough to follow up on their short term plan with Jeff Ireland's recent defensive influence?

I know he has to value his marketability as a Saint for endorsements and will take that into consideration if money is a factor.

Does he chase another ring elsewhere if needed or stay here with Payton and continue to break records? Thoughts?

That is correct.

That's not the case if you take Drew at his word. The action of the deal itself lends weight to that.

I think the plan is threefold. First is to free up some dollars short term. Second is to give Drew the opportunity to retire as a Saint. Third is to give both sides an out if the situation is no longer working.

Essentially Drew has agreed to a series of 1 year deals, with the opportunity for a clean break (hopefully via retirement) after each year.

Money didn't seem to be the factor. Not taking the extension at all was the way to maximize both the dollars and the years. So that's why I believe Drew when he said that he has no plans to play for any other team or any other coach.

The latter. That's what Drew has said, and the framework of the contract supports those words.

Let's hope we can all find a way back so that Drew gets the opportunity to ride off into the sunset carrying another Lombardi.

Super Bowl Championships: New Orleans Saints:1, Carolina:0, Atlanta Chokers: STILL ZERO

Only Atlanta choked in an unchokable situation... Life is definitely good.

Interesting theory, anything is possible but I do think the organization understands what needs to happen.

I agree. The deal gives him security of another year and he doesn't have to worry if his stock goes down or he gets injured.
A Qb like Brees would be dumb to play out his last year on a contract without an insurance policy in case he gets hurt.
It's a contract that could make him pretty trade friendly if the Saints were so inclined.
Don't listen to Guido, he is the biggest Brees fanboy I have ever seen.

Dude, the contract has a no trade clause. Did you even read anything about the details?

If the Saints want to trade him and he wants to go you can bet it will happen.

I hope to god it doesn't.

Dude, the man has said repeatedly that he plans to play the rest of his career in New Orleans. That is why the no trade clause is in place. Hell, an asteroid may hit Earth next year, but I'm not posting comments here about the infinitesimal chance that it may occur.

Sheesh!
