Saints claim rookie quarterback
 

The Saints have claimed rookie quarterback Joe Callahan via waivers from the Packers.

The Packers waived Callahan Thursday. He had made the team — and apparently made an impression on the Saints — with a strong preseason showing. Callahan is an undrafted rookie who played Div. III college football at Wesley.

The Saints had been going with just Drew Brees and Luke McCown at quarterback on the active roster since cutting Garrett Grayson, a second-year player who’s on the practice squad.

The Saints cut veteran tackle Khalif Barnes to create room on the roster for Callahan.

The Packers loved this kid and he looked damn good in preseason. No doubt they were hoping they could stash him on the practice squad. Not a good look for Grayson.

The 6-foot-1, 216-pounder came seemingly out of nowhere (actually, he came out of Division III Wesley College in Delaware) to complete 54 of 88 passes (61.4 percent) for 499 yards, three touchdowns and no interceptions during the preseason.

Joe Callahan has all the intangibles and attributes you look for. Despite playing for D-III Wesley College in Dover, Delaware, Callahan displayed many key attributes for a NFL level signal caller. The few that stick out were his arm strength, athletic ability, grit, and leadership. He has the ability to make these crazy plays when his body is in weird positions. In all reality he really reminds me of a poor man’s Brett Favre.

He’s considered a smart quarterback (6-1, 216 pounds) with a high football IQ, decent arm strength and good scrambling ability.

I've talked to a couple of friends that are Packer fans and they're pissed they let this kid go.

Its because we're trading Brees and we'll need a couple decent prospects behind 51 year old backup Luke McCown.
