New Orleans Saints Are Wasting the End of Drew Brees' HOF Career
New Orleans Saints Are Wasting the End of Drew Brees' HOF Career
By Sean Tomlinson , NFL Analyst Oct 18, 2016 There will be a midsummer night sometime in the future when Drew Brees steps up to a podium in Canton, Ohio, and slips on his gold jacket for the first time. His inclusion in the Pro Football Hall of Fame is a mere matter of waiting. The first wait is simply for his career to end, and the 37-year-old has bounced back nicely from a poor season by his high standards in 2014. Now he’s not showing any sign of slowing despite the forever-ticking age clock. The second wait will be whether he enters on the first ballot. That’s a conversation for another time, and for now let’s make the safe assumption that Brees will be staring back at a replica of his face one day. When that day comes we’ll remember his greatness, and more specifically the offensive fireworks he produced through pinpoint deep passing. We’ll still be awestruck by the ballooning passing numbers he pumped out, which now includes his membership in a unique club, as noted by SportsCenter: But we’ll look back with regret, too. That feeling is growing with each wasted season. The Saints have been blessed with a passer who’s among the best in his era at the most challenging position in football. And yet, due to circumstances out of the quarterback's control, they've made the playoffs just five times during Brees’ 10 full seasons in New Orleans. Even worse, as the prime of his career winds down the Saints have missed the postseason in three of the past four years. And 2016 isn’t exactly off to a promising start with the Saints sporting a 2-3 record after Week 6. The Saints are traveling down a familiar road again, one that ends with another lost season even as a masterful passer keeps catapulting his darts to every area of the field. The darkness closes in further when we compare Brees to the few peers on his level. Peyton Manning is in the early days of his retirement, and the Indianapolis Colts missed the playoffs just twice during his 13 years there. The New England Patriots have been consistent contenders with Tom Brady as their quarterback, whiffing on the postseason only once during his 15 years under center (excluding 2008 when he played one game). We are not wasting it. He could have signed elsewhere if he wanted. He wanted to stay here and we're as competitive as anyone else in the league.
How exactly are the Saints wasting his career? We max out the cap every year trying to add talent to this team, especially on defense. Pretty weak article. |

Does it even mention decimation of the D by injury? Lewis and Breaux never happened. Rankins has not played...on and on

Re: New Orleans Saints Are Wasting the End of Drew Brees' HOF Career
Look, it's not a bad point he's making in the article, it just may not be popular with some here. Drew is scoring an incredible 31 points a week, but the defense is giving up 33. News flash, that's not good! You may not like to hear it, but Drew will go down in the history books as the great quarterback who played offense with the WORST DEFENSE IN NFL HISTORY (2012 under Spags) and several other Saints defensive units since then (2014, 2015) have been statistically hovering pretty dangerously close to that legendary marker.
We may not like it, but it's certainly a viewpoint. All the guy really says in the article, is that the team is not winning a lot, and the defense is largely to blame for that. Are people here really disagreeing with that? |

Nothing to see here, move on...weak in my opinion. Really doesn't matter where you play, winning is no guarantee any where. It is what it is...it's happened to many, many players

If he thought he could do better somewhere else he would go. With him at the heart even a decent defense would put us in the NFC game just about every year. When everything goes south it is usually the defenses fault but it's not like they haven't tried to improve on defense.

Re: New Orleans Saints Are Wasting the End of Drew Brees' HOF Career
Are the Packers wasting Rodgers career? Look at how long Carson Palmer played in Cincinnati!
The Saints could have traded/released Brees to go younger at QB and free up cap room, and Brees could have ended up with the Jets, Browns, Bills, etc. What would THAT have done for his career? Like the old saying goes; "If if was a fifth we'd all be drunk!" If the Saints hadn't wasted money on players that weren't worth it, Byrd, Gallette, et al maybe the Saints and Brees would have another Super Bowl ring. If in 2011 Gregg Williams had played zone in the NFC Divisional playoffs against the 40-whiners, Alex Smith doesn't have time to drive down the field and throw a game-winning TD. If the coaching staff had heeded the league's warning about the Saints 'bounty' program, SP wouldn't have been suspended and who knows how that season would have played out. When I saw Bleacher Report in the link I knew it was a garbage article. |

Defense is legit but my number 1 issue is with the games the saints have played over the years with the OL.
This off season FA money should go to signing a young proven committee or two on the OL and stop screwing around. I will say it again. As Drew goes so do the saints. |
