Defensive effort the past 5 weeks

Thought it would be beneficial to show the improvement the D has made recently, although now our D is playing well the offense decides to repeatedly turn the ball over.

Saints vs Chiefs

First half - 14 points allowed by the D, 7 more on Brees' pick 6
Second half - D allows 2 FG's - 6 points

Saints vs Seattle

First half - 7 points allowed, Seattle got another 7 from Ingram's fumble return
Second half - D allows 2 FG's - 6 points

Saints vs 49ers

First half - D blew some coverages, allowed 20 first half points
Second half - D allows 1 FG - 3 points

Saints vs Broncos

D struggled a little but you can't blame them when we turned the ball over 4 times, 3 times inside our own half

First Half - 10 points allowed
Second half - 15 points, 2 of them were the XP return that won the game

Saints vs Panthers

Brees turns the ball over twice in our own half

First half - 20 points allowed - 7 from the blocked FG attempt
Second half - 1 FG allowed - 3 points

From those games here are notable points

KC game - 320 total yards, but 0 sacks gained
Seattle game - 359 yards allowed, 1 sack and 1 interception
SF game - 485 yards allowed, 1 sack, 1 interception and 3 fumbles forced
Denver game - 337 yards allowed, 6 sacks, 2 interceptions
Panthers game - 223 yard allowed, 2 sacks

There is definitely improvement there, Nick Fairley is a disruptive force in the middle and the D line as a whole has played better since Sheldon Rankins came back.

It's just unfortunate that when the D plays better, the O feels they have to test them by turning the ball over multiple times in our own half.

Nice stats Diz -

I'd like to add one more from last night ... Carolina rushed for 50 yards on 27 carries (1.9 ypc). Good run stuffing D for the Saints.

Wow, I completely missed that stat but that's incredible.
They are certainly turning a corner!

The second half adjustments have been great, but I'm kind of wondering why we can't go into a game with a defensive game plan that works? It seems like we're usually relying on seeing what they give us in the first half and then we start game planning.

I understand what your saying, I wouldn't say the gameplan in the first half is entirely not working though, the D has just been put in awful situations by the offense.

Seattle game 7 first half points by the D
Denver - 10 first half points after brees threw 2 interceptions on the first two drives

As a supposed "Number 1 offense" they should be helping not hurting our D.

In fact over the last 5 games the defense has allowed 23.6 points per game and thats including all the turnovers turned into points and the blocked FG's which are not the defenses fault.

That 1st goal line stop was the best and to do it twice after short field after Brees fumble! I just knew we were going to win but I should've took notice that Brees was a little off. Brees wasn't himself, he held the ball to long, threw in double coverage a duck that was picked off and I might be the only one but when he throw the ball to Fleener, I cringe or get nervous. I am not saying he was the reason we lost. I just expected more from him since he been carrying this offense.

Effort has never been the problem. Health and execution was the problem.

Re: Defensive effort the past 5 weeks

It's a shame we always start sluggishly lately on both offense and defense.

However, the defense does alter the game plan nicely as the game goes along. And the results should put us some where around that middle of the pack defense we all hoped for. I seem to remember several people saying that would win Championships. Well? I'm waiting.....

Re: Defensive effort the past 5 weeks

If our defense didn't start out sluggish they were gonna allow a TD at some point. Defense did did well starting out it was our offense that didn't. 10 points isn't hard for good teams to score in the first half, it is for us.

We asked for this defense but sadly our offense looks inconsistent. The fans here got what they wanted. But Brees doesn't look as monstrous these last few weeks like in the past(except for SF).
