Darius staying put.
AP reports dwindling trade prospects have left SS Donovin Darius with little choice but to play another season with the Jaguars, a source close to the situation said Sunday. Jaguars owner Wayne Weaver recently gave Darius permission to work out a trade because Darius remains unhappy about being designated the team's franchise player for a third consecutive year, even though it guarantees him a $4.97 million salary this fall. After receiving that permission two weeks ago, Darius publicly criticized the Jaguars and openly campaigned to media in Miami and Minneapolis to be traded to one of those cities. But the source, who did not want to be identified, said a trade now appears unlikely. The Minnesota Vikings showed the most interest in acquiring Darius, but the source said that interest waned when the Jaguars turned down two trade proposals in the past week. The Vikings first offered to switch first-round picks in the upcoming NFL Draft with the Jaguars, giving Jacksonville the seventh overall choice while Minnesota would take the Jaguars' spot at No. 21. But the Jaguars turned down that proposal, the source said, as well as a second offer from the Vikings of a third-round pick for Darius. With the Jaguars unwilling to do a deal, the Vikings' interest in Darius ceased Saturday when Minnesota signed former Green Bay safety Darren Sharper. No other teams, including the Miami Dolphins, have discussed a trade with the Jaguars because clubs don't want to surrender draft picks for a player at a position (safety) that can be filled in free agency, the source said.
