New Orleans Saints could trade Sean Payton and not ask for much in return

1 Attachment(s)
The New Orleans Saints, mired in another non-winning season, could decide to trade away coach Sean Payton and not ask for much in return, according to a CBS Sports report Sunday.

The report said a trade could happen "should there be suitors," and that the Saints "may be undergoing a front office restructuring of sorts."

"I don't think it would take all that much to get him, actually," one source said in the report. "I don't think (general manager) Mickey (Loomis) would hold him back or ask for all that much in return at this point."

Payton last offseason signed a five-year contract through 2020 reported to be in excess of $45 million, which at the time appeared to put to rest any talk about him leaving the Saints at any point in the near future.

But, with the Saints at 5-8 and assured of at least a third consecutive season without a winning record, another potential trade report similar to those that popped up late last season has come.

It is not that I think SP is a bad coach, I just think he needs a reboot

It'll be either LA or Dallas when he goes...

But don't let Loomis handle the negotiations should this become a reality...

Was glad to see columnists on Eric Asher's show finally saying that Loomis is a liability, doesn't evaluate talent well, lacks the backbone to check Payton on personnel moves - things that some of us have been beating the drum about for four+ years...

I doubt he is going anywhere. With that said, if the 2017 season turns out this way, then all bets are off for the coaching staff and front office.

Dallas ?! To become a puppet? He would have zero control.

Highly unlikely.

IDK...I still see 2017 being the final make or break year. Brees will have 1 more year. Either we start a upwards trend and make the playoffs next year or we continue to be mediocre or worst, but either way 2017 is it.

He'll straighten things out over the off season I believe. I read his book and he just needs some new influences with new faces in coaching and pro scouting to get back on track. I will not give up on him.

If we did trade sean, probably not going to happen, but if we did should trade drew for as many picks as possible and just reboot?

Also, what coach would you chose if you could have anyone, and I don't mean from the past, I am being serious. (dont say chip kelly you know he is highly sought)

I doubt anyone good would want to come here with an aging owner and the uncertainty behind that. Also with our cap situation. It's better but won't do a new coach any favors.

I think that is underestimating how many young guys there are out there that wants to be HCs.

Agree. Any coach would jump at it. There are 32 spots in the league, you take what you can get

and the real **** bout all of this is another masterful job by Mick to throw good money out the window, holy smokes man. Does he get like 10% of this or something because he has mastered the art of giving away Tom's money

Ick. Oh brother. I'd rather just wait until after the 2017 season then make a decision. Another off season coming up loaded with trade/fire talks. Yay.

I can't see any team in their right mind taking on his contract.

This is exactly what losing does. 3 straight seasons, somethings got to give.

repeat rumor resurface

If SP did end up in LA it will be because of Roger.

"according to a CBS Sports report Sunday." what a bunch of hacks

Listening to Payton's presser now. There were several attempts by reporters to engage him on this rumor. His response: "Next question".

Payton to LA makes too much sense. They want to make a splash and he's the rock star, hard-partying head coach who likes to pal around with celebrities.

Everyone knows the dude likes to party too much. I think it is affecting him. This job gives him a nice secure job where he can get comfortable.

Let's hope 7-9 doesn't continue to stay with them

Like they say crap rolls downhill. I would start with Mickey Loomis and work my way down. I don't think there are a lot of teams that would give up anything for him either. I also think it is one more shot for them but who knows for sure.

ok i will play along

SP goes then Drew goes. package deal

I would hate to put Drew through a coaching change this late in his career.

I like Drew to much to put him through that.

Re: New Orleans Saints could trade Sean Payton and not ask for much in return

If Payton somehow goes (I don't think it's likely), hope you like Vitt or Dennis Allen as your next head coach....Loomis is not going to risk rocking the boat with the Bensons, or put his own self on the hot seat if Payton somehow leaves...as long as Loomis is around the current situation with the Benson family, the Pelicans etc, the next hire will be an insider for sure. Normal rules do not apply.

Why would either want to go. We are so close to another 7-9 season that we could easily make the Superbowl next season.

obviously not many here recall the 70's and 80's.

We are closer to the play offs with SP and Brees than we are switching race horses.

Unless you line someone up you just can't pass on as a coach. I don't see anyone on the radar.

Getting rid of Payton would be the dumbest move by an NFL franchise in the history of the NFL.

This team is young, and getting better... you can't ask for anything more. We are very close to turning the corner. Cutting that off before we get the chance to turn the corner would be another level stupid.

This is what I think. Nobody out there is better a nobody out there can give us a shot at the super bowl within the next 2 years. We start over with a new HC and QB and we are looking at 5years at least.

At this point it Could or Couldn't happen. If he sees that fork in the road, he might take it. 10% of coaching is physical the other 50% is mental!

Re: New Orleans Saints could trade Sean Payton and not ask for much in return

A few weeks ago a lot of people wanted Cooks gone. We are young and I didn't think we would make the playoffs last year or this year but a lot of money comes off the books for next year and a few players with big contracts could be cut. I said it three years ago and I stand by my prediction that we will win the division next year and be contenders as long as Payton and Brees are both here.

SP could be courted by another team with a big offer.... money talks.
There are going to be a lot of openings for HC's this year.

SP can't go anywhere because he's under contract. However, it doesn't mean that I'm for him.
