Super Saints Weekly 144 Preview

Sources report that Saints’ coach Jim Haslett likes LSU cornerback Corey Webster and believes that his style of play would fit in well in New Orleans defensive system. Webster would appear a welcome addition to the Saints with a selection in the second round; however, several teams feel that his disappointing senior season was more of a result of minor injuries than a drop off in performance. If that turns out to be the case, Webster, who was projected by many as a top 15 pick if he would have come out in last year’s draft, could easily sneak back into the first round and be off the board early. If that is the case, then another LSU cornerback could be a possibility. Travis Daniels has caught they eye of many NFL scouts and could turn out to be a very good gamble with a middle to late round pick in this year’s NFL Draft.

Earlier in the year it was being reported that the Saints liked tight end prospect Heath Miller out of Virginia. However, sources report that recent workouts have many with the team concerned over his poor blocking ability and believing that if the team were to draft him that they would be stuck with another situation similar to how they were with Boo Williams a few years ago. A few believe that if they were to select him they would have a tight end that can be an excellent receiving threat, but a liability in the running game. Considering the reports that the Saints want to become more run oriented and utilize the play action pass, adding Miller could hurt this style offense, more than helping it. Unless Miller performs better in personal workouts and shows an improvement in his blocking techniques, then expect the Saints to ignore him in the first round.

Various sources are reporting that the Saints defensive tackle Johnathan Sullivan has once again found his fire for the game. While it remains to be seen if thisis true, the early reports show that there may be some truth to the story. Originally reported to be against the idea of staying in New Orleans to take part in off-season conditioning programs, Sullivan is now expected to report. This is a good sign for Saints fans who have apparently conceded the fact that Sullivan is looking like a bust. However, perhaps fans can take comfort in Titans defensive tackle Albert Haynesworth, who was considered by many to be a bust after his first season. Haynesworth has drastically improved recently and is beginning to show flashes of the promise that made him a first round selection by the Titans. Saints fans can look at his story and perhaps hope that Sullivan will do the same. Whether or not Sullivan truly is committed to football remains to be seen, but one thing seems sure, this will be a make or break off-season for the young defensive tackle.

Boo Williams could be on his way out during this off-season. It is rumored that several members of the organization are disappointed with Williams’ past year and failure to step up and become the tight end the club would have liked to seen him develop into. With the Saints having a stock pile of several quality tight ends and the promising Zach Hilton looking for playing time, don’t be surprised if Williams is dealt.

Sully wasn\'t considered a bust until after his second season, with a trip to an Atlanta buffet line BEFORE a game he wasn\'t playing in, and not cause of health reasons. I wonder if there are those kinds of reports about Haynesworth. Sarcasm aside, lord I hope they are right about him gaining some fire. Just enough to where he can contribute something, anything. HE will never live up to his value, but at least be solid.

Being that I am a student at LSU, I will give as much \"inside\" insight as I can. I know that the Saints were well represented in attendance including scout Thompson(I cant think of his first name off the top of my head). However, if they were hear to see Webster, they were in disappoinment because he is not working out until the second LSU pro day. I like Webster. Ive personally met the guy and he is rather down to earth. However, I do think that his success in his junior campaign got to his head last season. Instead of using technique to defend, he tried to rely soley on his athletic ability which lead to him getting beat a bit often. Overall, I think he is a good prospect but still has a lot to learn about the position. I think now that he has been humbled a bit, he could turn out some nice production rather early in his career. Ive seen him falling to the third round, but if they want him that bad, they may want to try to acquire another second rounder to assure themselves. First round is too much of a reach. Hope this perspective helps.
