Lose Loomis and keep Payton. Loomis is the GM right? Maybe he should accept the responsibility.

The lions is still a close call in that case and Brees and the oline would have to have Detroit scared to rush him in the redzone. Atlanta's second game is still a close call as that onside kick would not have been kicked if the saints were not down two scores. In this case, the Atlanta offense without that first big play takes time off the clock, before kicking a fg or punting, and chances are we have only 10 at the half and not 13. Maybe we get a turnover and we have 17. Atlanta probably scores 20 at the half. The raiders did not even score 35 at the half, neither did SD. That's more to do with Atlanta's offense than our defense. So we could have been 9-7 and out. |

Re: Can't say what will happen but this is growing legs
The problem I have with the opinion that we are just a defense away from contending again, and therefore Payton isn't the problem, is that much of the problems on defense can be attributed to his unwillingness to part ways with his buddies.
He doesn't hire very well, when he does make changes, but we have that cast of characters who just won't leave, because Payton won't make them. If that doesn't change, I don't know that the arrow will ever point in the right direction for this organization. I'd like to think that there is enough talent, that if it grows, we will be good. But I can't help but wonder if that growth won't be stunted by our coaching staff, because that has been their reputation on the defensive side of the ball. I know everyone wants to know who would replace Sean if he ever left or got fired, and I don't know the answer. I know some names I'd go after, but I don't know what the Saints will actually do. All I know is what I've been opining on for some time, and that is that if Sean won't budge on this stale coaching staff, I don't see how we benefit from continuing to sit around on the memories of yesteryear. |
