March 16
(12:01 AM): Big men sizzle at FSU workout… Any doubts that Florida State OT Alex Barron was going to go to the 2005 draft as the top-rated offensive lineman were pretty much erased at yesterday’s Seminoles’ on-campus workout. Barron, who measured in at a robust 6-7 ½ and 320 pounds reportedly ran the 40 in around 4.85, a very fast time for a player that size. Barron was running on what has been described as a very fast track, however, he backed up that run posting an athletic 38 inch vertical leap. Meanwhile, DT Travis Johnson, another potential top 15 pick at this April’s draft, also posted some impressive numbers, running the 40 in the low 4.90 range, running at 6-4, 296. One player who didn’t work out, however, was former Florida State QB Adrian McPherson. McPherson, who was kicked out of school a couple of years ago because of some off-field problems that included gambling allegations, had asked Seminoles’ officials if he could participate in the team’s workout. However, like former Ohio State RB Maurice Clarett who was denied permission to workout at that school’s pro day, McPherson was turned down.
QB, DE headline big pro day sked… Today’s pro day workout could be one of the busiest of the year with workouts at Tennessee, Alabama, Arkansas, Maryland, Notre Dame, Syracuse, South Carolina, Utah, BYU and Illinois, among others on the schedule. Most of the attention, though, could be focused on the Utah workout where junior QB Alex Smith, who is competing with California junior Aaron Rodgers for the top grade among QBs, going through his paces. Rodgers will get his chance tomorrow when the Bears hold their second pro day. Pro scouts, though, are also keen to get their first real look at Maryland junior DE Shawne Merriman who could vault himself into the upper echelons of the draft with a top workout. Merriman, in fact, has been predicting that he’ll run under 4.50.

Pro Day Notes on players that might be of interest to Saints-

NEBRASKA senior linebacker BARRETT RUUD has received additional attention from Baltimore, Kansas City, New Orleans, Oakland and Tampa Bay during both the NFL Combine and his recent Pro Day. It should be noted that both Oakland and Tampa Bay were the coaching staffs at the Senior Bowl, which allowed them greater access to a guy like Ruud, who participated in the game.

FLORIDA junior linebacker CHANNING CROWDER worked out at his Pro Day on Thursday... one of the biggest questions coming out of his results was the fact that he had lost ten pounds (252-to-242) over just a 10-14 day period of time, since the NFL Combine... several teams mentioned that he might not be able to retain more than 235-240 pounds during a 16-game schedule, plus they were concerned with his weight fluctuation, which is not an oddity, as many prospects have been known to add "Bulk" or "Water" weight leading up to the Combine, so that they run/workout at the max weight possible... however, it should also be noted that Crowder left the workout on Thursday without speaking to the media or others, as he was not feeling well, and according one teammate was ill leading up to the event.
--------------
this guy has way too many quesions to me. 5 knee surgeries?
--------------

WASHINGTON senior offensive tackle KHALIF BARNES did onlypositional drills, as he felt comfortable with his results at the Combine... mentioned Houston, Jacksonville, Philadelphia, San Diego, St. Louis, Seattle and Tennessee as teams that have shown more interest than most, but said across the board he has gotten a lot attention, since the Senior Bowl... Seattle, Tennessee, Jacksonville and Philadelphia have all setup private visits with him
