Sean Payton tells WWL Radio: “My plan is definitely to be back here"
1 Attachment(s)
On Monday night’s Coaches Show with Bobby Hebert on WWL Radio, New Orleans Saints head coach Sean Payton may have shed some light on his potential future with the team. When asked whether or not he’ll definitively be coach of the team in 2017, Payton said, “Absolutely. My plan is to definitely be back here.”
Payton also added that he had four years left on his current contract, and that he planned on honoring it. The Saints have turned in three straight 7-9 finishes, but the general belief is that the team can make a serious run in 2017 after being in a good spot with salary cap space, returning players under contract, and an overall hunger by some key players. Payton has been the subject of mass speculation, to which he has failed to acknowledge the reports when asked by the media. Hopefully this can be put to bed and the Saints can start working on the new season. Sean Payton “definitely” plans to return to the Saints | ProFootballTalk |

That's all I wanted to hear coach. I know some of you want him gone, I still think he can do it. If we miss the playoffs again next year then I'll admit that you guys were probably right. In the meantime I have real hope for next year. We're getting younger in a lot of key areas with only a couple to go. Another solid draft and a few free agents can restock the cupboard for years to come. And of course...Please Lord Almighty, if you wouldn't mind...if we can stay relatively healthy it would make a huge difference.

Sean Payton “definitely” plans to return to the Saints
The annual “Sean Payton is leaving the Saints” rumors have hit fever pitch, with multiple reports linking him to the Rams. After days of silence, Payton has finally pushed back. Appearing Monday night on WWL in New Orleans, Payton said he intends to return in 2017. “My plan is definitely to be back here,” Payton said, via Mike Triplette of ESPN.com. “Shoot I’ve got four more years on my contract here. And I plan on honoring that.” Payton has resisted responding to the various rumors, many of which are planted by sources with an agenda to ambitious and/or desperate national reporters unwilling or unable to say, “Sorry, boss, I don’t have anything new today.” Some will parse his words to suggest that Payton’s “plan” can change. Others will suggest that perhaps this is part of a dance between Payton and the Saints, with the coach trying to get the team to reduce its compensation expectations or to eventually sever ties, allowing him to go to a new team without the new team giving up anything to get him. Perhaps the simple truth is that Payton was trying to avoid being presumptuous, given the reality that the Saints ultimately decide whether or not he actually continues in the job. ------------------------------------------ Can anyone say Rapoport or La Canfora? Re: Sean Payton tells WWL Radio: “My plan is definitely to be back here"
We have zero credible information to make a judgement with.
I do know that the correct bait, dangled by any organization, will achieve the desired result. I'm completely ambivalent regarding Payton's gig next year. His future as our HC only rates a "meh" from me either way. |

All coaches say they're gonna stay, even if they intend to leave. Its what they do.
However, I believe he's telling the truth. 2017 is setting up to be our best chance at a title run in a long while. Why would he leave with that on the plate? |
Re: Sean Payton tells WWL Radio: “My plan is definitely to be back here"
This all boils down to one thing: wins and losses. Win and all the speculative nonsense goes away. Keep losing and you see what happens.
I will say though, as a fan, I get SO tired of hearing **** like this from the media. To me it's embarrassing, and I think about organizations like the Steelers and the Patriots, and there doesn't seem to be the same "rift" between the local media and the staff. makes me wonder. |

But considering the Rams just fired a coach that went 7-9, 6-10, 7-9 and 7-8-1 from 2012-2015, why would they want to pay the largest ever contract to a coach that just hauled in his 3rd consecutive 7-9 season? |
Re: Sean Payton tells WWL Radio: “My plan is definitely to be back here"
If Payton stays we can expect more of the same.....another 7-9 season. I just don't see him making the leap from 3 loosing seasons to a winning season. He has one of the best QB's, which a lot of teams lack. Still he can't make it happen. He needs a change of scenery and so do we.
FYI..I have nothing but love for Sean. However I love this team more. |

Suck it up. Payton is staying and it is the best for the Saints' future. Yeah, Payton would be helped going to a franchise that is totally dysfunctional. Yeah, the Saints would be helped by splitting up the greatest offensive pairing in NFL history. Yeah, throwing out everything positive makes everything better. What the hell? |
Re: Sean Payton tells WWL Radio: “My plan is definitely to be back here"
I like Jim Henderson's take on this in that this is Payton and his agent stoking his market - why exactly he'd do this is a head scratcher, but Payton is the one who has to come down with the definitive door on the rumors...

Re: Sean Payton tells WWL Radio: “My plan is definitely to be back here"
Sounds like you're the dumbass. We would have a competent GM because if Payton goes we would not keep Loomis. And the key to avoidig injuries is proper diet. That NO food is not healthy and the atmosphere does not help as it's not a high maintenance area. Furthermore, injuries always happen. And half those guys hurt were injury prone to begin with. When someone gets hurt two years in a row, they won't work out. I guess what you are hoping for is Bryce Harper effect. He got hurt every year until his next breakout year. But he had a breakout year first before the injuries started. Williams, Swann are not cut out for the NFL. Kikaha is on a short leash if he gets hurt again. Armstead, that's why you draft depth. Streiff used to be a backup to Stichcomb.

And drop the WE crap, WillSaintDumbAss. You already claimed you were no longer a Saints fan after your short stint. Just move the hell on to one of your other flavors of the day.

Re: Sean Payton tells WWL Radio: “My plan is definitely to be back here"
No one has a crystal ball to predict what will happen. The best predictor of future results is past results. All these excuses about injuries blah blah blah - I guarantee you every team playing in the post season this year and for the past 50+ years in the NFL had to deal with injuries. The good coaches/GM's overcome that with good drafting, picking up good FA's, and coaching. Honestly, I think Loomis is more to blame than Payton, but Payton had a big hand in all 3 factors that I mentioned above.

What did I say? Brees and Payton stay. They are an institution in NOLA. Changing the HC here isn't a guarantee anyway.

"OFFENSE!!!" "He won SB". "His FO doesn't get him the right players". "Needs change of scenery". "Playing in 2nd largest NFL market will re-energize him". "If he did all of that with Brees, imagine what can he do with Goff". "If he can lead the Saints to the SB..." etc. etc. etc. Fans like new shiny things, and Payton would definitely qualify as a shiny new thing. |

Now, I am not going to present and in-depth study of injuries in the NFL, but there are valid questions that can be posed, like what causes your team to consistently, year after year, have an inordinate amount of injuries that prevent players from playing? Surely the game is hard enough, and most players play hurt to some level... but, is the team doing enough to prevent injuries? Is the training staff doing its job in properly preparing players for games? Is the medical staff doing enough to diagnose and prevent injuries? Is the team disregarding, or not able to properly assess, the health of players when they are signed? Now, who's responsible for overseeing all of that? I don't know. BUT, given what we know of Payton, would you be surprised if, say, the training staff was not up to par, and Payton refuses to dismiss it? |

When you're losing everyone goes to IR, that's the secret coaches friend. Just want to make sure that the 7-9 seasons haven't been a result of poor FA judgement and drafting? Cause we have got a lot out of Byrd, Champ, laurinaitis, Browner, Spiller Don't even get us started on the draft classes over the last 5 seasons. Maybe the problems are poor cap management for years, bad FA contracts and signings, and poor draft evaluations. Yeah, that seems fairly accurate. |
