Mel Kiper Mock Draft Version 2.0

Saints select...

Solomon Thomas, DE, Stanford

"By their recent standards, the Saints took a small step forward on defense last season, but they really only went from "worst" to "almost the worst." They simply have to get better on that side of the ball if they want to be more than a .500-range team, even with a great offense. Thomas can be a terror as a pass-rusher, but he's a pretty complete player and simply makes you better."

Could Solomon Thomas be this year's Sheldon Rankins?

I think he could.

We won't get a shot at him at 11.

At lot is still going to happen between now and the draft...

QB Patrick Mahomes, Texas Tech is now being talked about in the first round...

Here's the thing with this year's draft - Will Cleveland, San Francisco and Chicago stay disciplined and take the BPA or will owner's and luxury suite/season ticket politics push these teams to reach for QBs???

I suspect that if one takes a QB, you'll see an early run because you have two other playoff teams downstream Texans & Broncos who are feeling that their QBs are limiting their respective team's success...

Not to mention you've got two potential playoff teams in the Jets and Bills who are directly limited by their QB play...

Then you've got 'Zona who'd really like to get some youth at the position and not deal with the imminent retirement and fragility of Carson Palmer any longer...

So there's teams there who'll pull the trigger and maybe don't want to draft overrated QBs in Watson and Kizer...

A lot of those teams'll be drafting after us. How will those effect the available players in the positions we really need at #11?

I would not be surprised to see all the QB still on the board at 11

which would be a good thing. Browns probably would use that second first on the #1 rated QB on their board. So if any team below them, say the cards? then a quick flip of picks that involve a few places would be an option. I still love our spot. Any way I do the mock we are always sitting good.

It's more the latter teams would not be reaching for some of those quarterbacks which may make those in front of us reach and allow some impact defenders to fall to us...

Charlton at No. 11? He's gonna have to do something special at the combine...

Taco is going to be good with some coaching but he's still too raw to take at #11. There will be better options available I believe.

Anytime I see the word raw, SJB comes to mind. I recall Mayock saying "raw" quite a few times in his pre draft evaluations on him. At pick #11, we need to draft a kid (see Rankins) ready to start & make an impact from week 1.

I'm with you on Taco ... pass.

Alright guys, let's take a break from crying about the Cooks trade and talk about something more productive... We have an extra 1st round pick! Who are some late 1st round players you like that probably wouldn't have still been on the board when our 2nd round pick rolled around?

Maybe Charles Harris? TJ Watt? Adoree Jackson?

Tre'davious White- that's a great one! The first round will be so loaded with CB's I could easily see him being there at 32.

Bleacher Report had him going to us at #32. This one got hurt before he came to us. This will really set this kid back until next season at which point someone will have to take a significant risk to sign him

Re: 2017 New Orleans Saints Draft - Scouting Prospect Visits, Bowl Games

CB's just aren't durable nowadays. Even the best CB in the draft Marshon Lattimore got hurt working out at the combine. Really liked Sidney Jones though so it's awful news.

Yeah not good for the kid

We could get lucky if he slips to the 3rd with that though.
Id take him in the 3rd though i think somebody like th Browns with a ton of picks would nab him in the 2nd

Re: 2017 New Orleans Saints Draft - Scouting Prospect Visits, Bowl Games

CSN Mock post FA

11. NEW ORLEANS SAINTS - O.J. HOWARD, TE, ALABAMA

The Saints haven't adequately replaced Jimmy Graham -- until now. The 6-foot-6 Howard dominated the Senor Bowl, only adding to his already formidable hype. Speed receiver John Ross becomes an option if New Orleans deals Brandin Cooks and New Orleans could certainly add corners considering the receivers in the NFC South.

32. New Orleans Saints (Via NE) - Marlon Humphrey, CB, Alabama
32. NEW ORLEANS SAINTS (VIA NE) - MARLON HUMPHREY, CB, ALABAMA

With six divisional games against the likes of Julio Jones, Mike Evans and Kelvin Benjamin, stocking up at corner is a smart strategy. That the 2016 Saints ranked among the bottom teams in passing yards allowed provides further ammunition for taking a pass defender. That the Saints didn't acquire Malcolm Butler in the Brandin Cooks trade means they should probably use New England's ex-pick to get that kind of help.

I don't really trust Alabama cornerbacks. Humphrey has the size and speed I like. He's also very aggressive, but he gives up the big play because of it

I'll tell you who I'm starting to like at #11 if Reuben Foster is gone, Sidney Jones. Sidney Jones is one hell of a corner. 6'0. 4.4 speed. Press, man corner. He's exactly what we're looking for.

The National Championship Game showed me he was just like pretty much every other Alabama corner. The same way Bellichick can make a DB, Nick Saban does the same thing.

I don't like this mock .. at all.

Where is Reuben Foster? Solomon Thomas, Takk McKinley OR Barnett aka Mr. Consistency?? There is no way I'd take a TE at #11 when we are in desperation mode for a DE/pass rusher.
