There is still a chance that the Dallas Cowboys, or some other team for that matter, will acquire defensive end Darren Howard in a trade with the New Orleans Saints. But now that the March 16 deadline for signing franchise players to long-term deals has passed, the sense of urgency to grab Howard has abated dramatically. It appeared the Cowboys were in position to reach a long-term contract with Howard but could not agree with the Saints on the trade compensation to New Orleans. Rumors persist that the Saints sought Dallas middle linebacker Dat Nguyen in the proposed swap. Those same rumors suggest that, while owner Jerry Jones was prepared to sacrifice his human tackling machine, coach Bill Parcells did not want to part with Nguyen, who he feels is a team leader. The irony there, if the rumors are accurate, is that it's Parcells who does not like small linebackers, such as the undersized Nguyen. The smart money is that Howard will still be traded before training camps open. New Orleans, which has a pair of first-round defensive ends in Charles Grant and Will Smith, could keep Howard around. But with a salary and cap charge of $7.8 million on the books for now, it's a tad prohibitive, given that Howard isn't projected as a starter.

Another Saints issue: Wide receiver Joe Horn, who seems to request a contract upgrade on a yearly basis, is making noise again. Don't look for New Orleans to make any kind of move to enhance his deal. The Saints want to work on contract extensions for tailback Deuce McAllister, center LeCharles Bentley and cornerback Mike McKenzie. They've taken care of Horn's grievances in the past, he's still under contract, and the team will turn a deaf ear to his rather plaintive bleating this time around.

I like the \"deaf ear\" strategy. Let him play out at 4.8 this year and then let\'s talk about it. If he performs well, he shouldn\'t have to worry about it. I\'m sure he\'ll get his fair share at the end of the year, even if it\'s not here. Would love to sign him to a 3 year deal at the end of the year though... he is a solid NFL receiver. Shouldn\'t be hard resigning him at the end of the year because Mason\'s contract should pretty much outline Horn\'s contract.

Everyone is entitled to be stupid, but some abuse the privilege.

All little common sense goes a long way.

Sources tell RanchReport.com that a potential trade that would send Darren Howard from the New Orleans Saints to the Dallas Cowboys is far from being dead in the water.

Here\'s what we know of this potential trade, as of Friday:

* The hold up in a potential trade continues to rest with what the New Orleans Saints would accept in return for Howard. The Cowboys and Howard are in the same ballpark in what it would take to sign him and restructure his contract to a long-term deal.

* The Saints want a first round pick in return, but the Cowboys don\'t want to part ways with either of their first round picks in this year\'s draft. As of Friday, the Cowboys are unwilling to part ways with their No. 20 overall selection.

* The Cowboys are willing to part ways with a second round pick in this year\'s draft, and possibly a defensive player, or future pick to get this deal done. The Saints wanted Dat Nguyen, but the Cowboys continue to insist that Nguyen is not on the table.

* Initial reports suggest that the Cowboys do not want to part ways with next year\'s first round pick as part of a potential trade. Owner Jerry Jones simply does not want to give up the Cowboys only first round pick in 2006.

* The key here now rests with the Cowboys and Vice president Stephen Jones, who has been in charge of negotiating with Howard\'s agent, Gary Wichard. The Saints want to get rid of Howard and his $7.8 million hit against the cap. Jones must now find a way to entice the Saints to doing just that.

* Sources say the Cowboys have not been in any hurry to get this deal done. Why? Maybe Jones hopes the Saints will lower their expectations of what to expect in return for a trade as each day goes by. Or maybe the organization has been busy dealing with stadium issues, and also the resigning of Emmitt Smith. Making the Saints wait on this deal may not be a bad idea.

* The Cowboys still appear to be the frontrunner to land Howard. The Seattle Seahawks, once believed to be a major challenger, just signed a defensive end earlier this week when former Rams lineman Bryce Fisher inked a deal.

* The timeframe for this deal remains unclear, but sources maintain that the deal is far from dead, and could go down at anytime under the right circumstances.
from scout.com

basically, it\'s looking like we are the hold up more or less-we want a first, they will give a second...we want a defensive player if they give us a second...they want to give us scrubs.

I actually have to admire the saints for holding out-worst case scenario you have a good DE on you team and have to cut corners elsewhere..but here\'s hoping loomis is a good accountant....

I just hope that sooner than later, someone (dallass) gives in and we get either a first or a could of seconds...

baronm -

I\'m not familar with scout.com. Is it a credible source? That\'s one of the more believeable articles I\'ve read on the Howard trade.

I have to agree with you baron. I want Howard traded but I have to admire the front office for sticking to their guns, if that\'s the case. Kudos to them.

Something doesn\'t add up to me, and here\'s why.

There have been many rumors concerning the Cowboys transitioning to a 3-4 defense this year, and those rumors persisted when they signed Jason Ferguson, who is a true NT.

Now, they appear to be interested in Darren Howard, and there has been NO rumor about trading LaRoi Glover. This would fly in the face of migrating to 3-4, Howard and Glover wouldn\'t fit into the puzzle.

So let\'s say for the sake of arguing that they are going to stay predominantly with a 4-3 defense. Why do they need Dat AND Bradie James? Wouldn\'t the thought of obtaining one of the better defensive ends in the game, both against the pass and the run, and being a position that the Cowboys have been needing to address for years, make one of these two expendable? I love Howard, but I\'m not stupid. There\'s no room for him here anymore, and I\'m very anxious to see what Smith will do on a full time basis.

The waiting drove me mad....
I don't want to hear from those that know...

Didn\'t they cut Coakley? In a 4-3, it\'s Dat, Singleton and James on the field now right? How does Howard not fit? From the Cowboys fans I have spoken to, it seemed the team was willing to stay majority 4-3 if Howard was acquired. I can believe that. Thay had spoken a lot about the 3-4 though, but that was before the cut Coakley. There was also speculation they may draft Merriman and if that is the case, I would have to believe they would go 3-4. an actual trade may come down to the draft itself.

So James will play the weak side? Ok, that makes sense.

Not sure why that didn\'t click before, but like I said, something wasn\'t adding up.

It\'s no prob. Living in San Antone, and talking to many Dallas fans daily on another site, I know more about their team than I would ever like to, and this trade for Howard talk opened up even more convo.
