I do recall that & his name came up quite a bit at camp prior to the injury. Hopefully Erik is 100%.

Kind of crazy seeing we run a 3 safety set some of the time. Wonder if they have their eye on someone in FA. It pretty much guarantees they draft and sign someone. How great would it be to see Adams fall to us in rd 1!!!!!

From a cap standpoint, when Byrd was a healthy bench, he was done; and I believe you play rookies and let them get real experience, not practice for three years...
Maybe coaches knew they didn't have a contender so they went with Bell, who I admit, I didn't like the pick (two picks for one)...

And though Bell didn't grade well, I saw some pop and energy I hadn't seen at the position for the Saints since the other Bush left for Detroit...

Just know that Jairus Byrd aka Roger Dorn wasn't getting it done; why pay that money when we're still were last in passing defense?

While I agree JB wasn't getting done, I will say he didn't have the supporting cast around him. It's difficult for a FS to succeed when the secondary around him is weak & he's playing a role that doesn't fit his ability.

I think the signing of Harper made him expendable

Good luck finding a replacement at that price equal or better than Byrd. If they were so inclined to get rid of him, why not let JB play out this season and then cut him next year when it cost them nothing? In my opinion, we've created a hole. What am I missing here?

Cap Guru's, feel free to chime in.

i think cutting him next year still costs us like 3.5 mil or so, so basically making him, if we do, a post june 1 cut saves us 7.2 or something this year, pushes 4 to next year which we would have paid cutting him next year anyway.

Ya just can't get paid like that if you're not playing like that. I wish him well but happy to see we're about to move on...

Re: Saints Will Release Jairus Byrd

S - Bye Bye Jairus Byrd? Cap Saving 2017 $3.7m 2018 $7.6m 2019 $9m
"Before this move, New Orleans was projected to have something around $30 million in cap space this offseason. Cutting Byrd straight up would save $3.2 million against the cap. If he is designated as a post-June 1 cut, the Saints can spread his dead money over two seasons, which would save them $7.8 million this season."

$2.4 to $5.25 million Contract Range

Could sign both and keep Kenny as the LB/S he is so good at

Duron Harmon, FS, New England Patriots (26) / 6'1' / 205 / Rd. 3 (91) / NE
A nickel safety trapped behind Devin McCourty and Patrick Chung has proven ability to play deep off the line of scrimmage and still influence play. Harmon has shown his adept skills in pass coverage and tracking down the football downfield and has made big plays for the team, Teams have no shortage of strong safety options, but a legitimate talent at free safety is a rare prize. He has helped in coverage, but not necessarily in one-on-one situations all that often.Belichick has spoken very highly of Harmon, including saying “He’s smart, he works hard, he studies, he trains hard” and even going as far as to say “Duron is, I’d say every team, or most every team I’ve ever coached, there are always a couple guys on the team that I would say, for lack of a better word, that are silent leaders” He is the guy to look to for a big pass break-up, or great coverage downfield, or the big-time interception when needed.

Micah Hyde FS/SS Green Bay Packers 26 / 6'0' / 197 / Rd. 5 (159) / GB
He is a dependable player who offers versatility. Hyde is capable of playing both free and strong safety. Hyde has showcased consistent football despite being trapped in a rotation with HaHa Clinton-Dix and Morgan Burnett in his tenure with the Packers. Hyde has racked up 227 tackles, 24 passes defensed, eight interceptions and four sacks in 63 career games. In addition, Hyde has punt return capabilities, recording three touchdowns throughout his career. He’ll most likely be searching for a starting opportunity.

Draft
Marcus Williams FS Utah 5116 195 4.56 #20 Jr
Eddie Jackson FS/SS/CB Alabama 6000 194 4.53 #4 Sr
Obi Melifonwu FS/SS/OLB UConn 6032 216 4.58? #20 rSr
Josh Jones SS/FS/LB N.C. State 6021 215 4.56 #11 rJr
John Johnson FS/CB Boston College 6002 202 4.54 SR
David Jones FS/SS/KR Richmond 6015 210 4.53 #13 rSr

Eddie Jackson is way overrated. He got abuse when there was no pressure on opposing qbs. Pass

Was Vonn Bell really that bad? Granted I didn't watch much football last year... but in the snaps I did see, I liked what I saw with Bell. He seems to be around the ball and made some nice plays. I thought I saw some long term potential there.

I'd like to re-iterate... I watched very little football last year.

Really interested to see how our CFL signing Forrest Hightower looks in OTA's and training camp. He could be an underrated option at FS.

He played good imo.... I don't get why some folks think he isn't a upgrade .... I think he is a huge upgrade.... Byrd was terrible for us.... VBell is young and hungry I see him as our starting FS next season

We're down a FS with cutting Byrd and I also don't think Harper will be back thats a SS and a FS having to be replaced and with CB.'s that we have made of glass they better do some serious thinking about these moves they are making.

Yeah he is raw there is no hiding it. Not even a year of playing time at S is a serious knock. But he showed enough IMO to be mid round pick and roll of the dice on upside. After him it gets thin really quick.

But with release of Byrd it will be interesting to see what the saints do,

a work in progress. in a single high safety line up he appeared lost way to much. school of hard knocks. let see what he does next year. I did not like the pick but he has time to prove me wrong. I will always give a player that.

Vonn Bell quit on a ton of plays where the ball was overthrown, he could have made a big interception in atleast 2-3 games but intentionally slowed down and let the ball hit the turf.

B.W Webb even looked at Vonn with his hands out as if to say " why didn't you catch it?"

He is a solid tackler, but the fact he quit on some noticeable plays irked me a little.

Byrd is not a single high safety, he was a ball hawk in Buffalo because they let him do what Ed Reed did in baltimore, roam the secondary and undercut crossing routes. Watch his Buffalo highlights, he plays 10-15 yards from the LOS.

Payton had him playing 25 yards downfield. It's not entirely Byrd's fault, he chased the money like an aging player would and Payton was dumb enough to pay someone 56 mil to use him entirely incorrectly.

It's always been Payton and so far this offseason Payton is acting like he's a power coach and a BB wannabe yet again.

I thought he played well enough later in the season to stay on since he knew the system. Apparently he isn't worth the money to the Saints. Vonn Bell needs to beast it up and Kenny needs to stay off the Adderol.
