Saints Will Release Jairus Byrd

Wow! Honestly thought we'd wait one more year. Step on up Vonn Bell.

I thought JB would stay (restructure) one more season. Makes me wonder who we target in FA and subsequent draft.

Just to confirm that it's not Rapaport B.S...

doesn't make sense to me
82 tackles and 2 picks isn't worth 3.7 million?
the guy finally starts looking like the big FA we signed and we cut him

ChrisXVI 02-28-2017 08:24 PM

Re: Saints Will Release Jairus Byrd

I believe if we designate him a post-June 1st cut we'll save $7.8 million versus $3.7 million.

Jamal Adams at #11? I'd be fine with that.

I'm not sure that is possible.
And I was wrong; it's 3.2 not 3.7

This is deep draft at DB position. Pass rusher or LB (Foster) in round 1...

Beastmode 02-28-2017 10:07 PM

Re: Saints Will Release Jairus Byrd

If there was ever a draft deep on defense this is it. A lot of mid to late round talent. I just wish there were more stellar WR's so better defenders would fall right to us. And I hope those QB's go early. Not much talent there. I don't think any of them deserve to be in the 1st round to be honest.

Re: Saints Will Release Jairus Byrd

Byrd was a complete liability in the backfield, he had 82 tackles but how many did he miss? How many of those were made further beyond the line of scrimmage than they should have been because of poor angles? he was terrible and his 2 picks came in one game when it didn't matter anymore. Time for an attitude change on D.

While the Saints are clearing books from the Byrd mess, are they letting Terry Fontenot Director Pro Scouting the past four years (Byrd, Spiller, Browner) go?!?

It sure has been a mess ... starting at the top.

I like the move, but now wondering what the real plan is? the reason I say that is Vonn Bell does not appear to be an upgrade at this point, but he was only a rookie so we shall see.

Re: Saints Will Release Jairus Byrd

I am not overly surprised by the move but I thought next year would have been the year but the saints must have a plan.

FA?
Micah Hyde FS/SS Green Bay Packers (26) / 6'0' / 197 / Rd. 5 (159) / GB

Draft?
Marcus Williams FS Utah 5116 195 4.56 #20 Jr
Eddie Jackson FS/CB Alabama 6000 194 4.53 #4 Sr
David Jones FS/SS/KR Richmond 6015 210 4.53 #13 rSr

Are the saints giving Vonn Bell the job?

If Byrd plays for us this year he counts 11.2 million against the cap
If he gets cut then he counts $8 mill against the cap, and 3.2 is freed up

Nick Underhill: Jairus Byrd's pending release means Saints' offseason moves will be vital | Saints | theadvocate.com

"Before this move, New Orleans was projected to have something around $30 million in cap space this offseason. Cutting Byrd straight up would save $3.2 million against the cap. If he is designated as a post-June 1 cut, the Saints can spread his dead money over two seasons, which would save them $7.8 million this season."

Re: Saints Will Release Jairus Byrd

He's finally healthy and we cut him to save 3.2 mil. Not so sure we can find another FS Byrds caliber at 3.2 mil. Some team is going to get a healthy FS at our expense. Bell is nowhere near ready. I hope their not thinking of Vaccarro at FS, that could get ugly.

I tend to agree we should ride this horse one more year.

Another poor decision...
The signing wasn't bad, no one knew for certain that Byrd would have so many issues. However, cutting the guy when he finally gets health seems idiotic. Should have just restructured and cut loses next year if it didn't pan out...

I somewhat get the scenario however aren't the Saints FO taking on more dead money with this move?? In the big picture, 3M certainly doesn't seem like a ton in cap relief. Good luck finding a replacement at that price equal or better than Byrd. If they were so inclined to get rid of him, why not let JB play out this season and then cut him next year when it cost them nothing? In my opinion, we've created a hole. What am I missing here?

Cap Guru's, feel free to chime in.

Why is it idiotic? At one point Vonn Bell was inserted for Byrd even though Byrd was healthy.

Why pay that money to a player who's in a reduced role or even benched? Now that would be idiotic.

We're finally seeing this front office get its proverbial act together because 3 7-9 finishes has them on notice.

If we continue to see the improvement with regards to Draft Management and Scouting, we should see that 7-9 mark improve as well as the talent improves...

Bell was border line bad last year. Rookie lumps? Maybe... JP, man I hope you are right but it's a risk. Moves like this make me wonder if the Saints FO is clearing cap space to make a "splash" on spending more than necessary in FA.

agree, but no one (including Loomis) has any idea what the market price will be for Fairley, Zeitler, Peterson, or hell, even Romo. Clearing another 3 million seems like a pittance for losing a player like Byrd.
My thought is, why gamble for another 3-4 million when you have 30 million to use now?

The real question is who in the heck are the Browns going to spend all that money on with all of the big names coming off the market/getting tagged :o?

The guy finally gets healthy and we prematurely cut him. Restructure at the least. Bell didn't look ready.

The league allows each team to designate up to two players per year as a June 1 cut for cap purposes prior to June 1. It’s the one concession that was given to the players as it allows a player to be cut in March and have time to explore free agency but have his cap hit spread out over two seasons, thus creating more cap space in the current year. The issue though is the mechanism by which this works.

When you designate someone as a June 1 cut the player and his current contract remain on the books until June 1.

yes, we could get 7.2 freed this year, but that means we carry an extra $4 million into next year. It's deferred, but not eliminated. We are arguing that since we already have $30, why do we need more right now?

Re: Saints Will Release Jairus Byrd

Pats will get him on the cheap and he'll be in the hunt for the Superbowl. He'll have 12 ints. this season and possibly a ring.

I don't think that will work out bringing in a bunch of top tier FA's all of a sudden. Too many egos. I bet a lot of that money will still be there.

Re: Saints Will Release Jairus Byrd

Regardless of if his body wasn't what it used to be, one thing I know for sure is this;

Byrd is not a single high safety, he was a ball hawk in Buffalo because they let him do what Ed Reed did in baltimore, roam the secondary and undercut crossing routes. Watch his Buffalo highlights, he plays 10-15 yards from the LOS.

Payton had him playing 25 yards downfield. It's not entirely Byrd's fault, he chased the money like an aging player would and Payton was dumb enough to pay someone 56 mil to use him entirely incorrectly.

Re: Saints Will Release Jairus Byrd

I just want to add that Erik Harris was getting a lot of 1st team reps last offseason over Byrd and Bell. Yes I know he's coming off the ACL tear but I think this move has been in the works for a while.

If the best player on the board at #11 is a safety, do you think we bite? I mean what are the chances that either Jamal Adams and/or Hooker fall to us? The comparisons I've read on these kids are Ed Reed/Darren Woodson type company.

A potential All Pro Safety for years to come in New Orleans? ... I can't wait for the draft.

Desmond King (converted to safety) in the 2nd round or Budda Baker in the 3rd are good options too.
