If Byrd plays for us this year he counts 11.2 million against the cap
If he gets cut then he counts $8 mill against the cap, and 3.2 is freed up

Nick Underhill: Jairus Byrd's pending release means Saints' offseason moves will be vital | Saints | theadvocate.com

"Before this move, New Orleans was projected to have something around $30 million in cap space this offseason. Cutting Byrd straight up would save $3.2 million against the cap. If he is designated as a post-June 1 cut, the Saints can spread his dead money over two seasons, which would save them $7.8 million this season."

He's finally healthy and we cut him to save 3.2 mil. Not so sure we can find another FS Byrds caliber at 3.2 mil. Some team is going to get a healthy FS at our expense. Bell is nowhere near ready. I hope their not thinking of Vaccarro at FS, that could get ugly.

the guy finally starts looking like the big FA we signed and we cut him
I tend to agree we should ride this horse one more year.

Another poor decision...
The signing wasn't bad, no one knew for certain that Byrd would have so many issues. However, cutting the guy when he finally gets health seems idiotic. Should have just restructured and cut loses next year if it didn't pan out...

I somewhat get the scenario however aren't the Saints FO taking on more dead money with this move?? In the big picture, 3M certainly doesn't seem like a ton in cap relief. Good luck finding a replacement at that price equal or better than Byrd. If they were so inclined to get rid of him, why not let JB play out this season and then cut him next year when it cost them nothing? In my opinion, we've created a hole. What am I missing here?

Cap Guru's, feel free to chime in.

Why is it idiotic? At one point Vonn Bell was inserted for Byrd even though Byrd was healthy.

Why pay that money to a player who's in a reduced role or even benched? Now that would be idiotic.

We're finally seeing this front office get its proverbial act together because 3 7-9 finishes has them on notice.

If we continue to see the improvement with regards to Draft Management and Scouting, we should see that 7-9 mark improve as well as the talent improves...

Bell was border line bad last year. Rookie lumps? Maybe... JP, man I hope you are right but it's a risk. Moves like this make me wonder if the Saints FO is clearing cap space to make a "splash" on spending more than necessary in FA.

agree, but no one (including Loomis) has any idea what the market price will be for Fairley, Zeitler, Peterson, or hell, even Romo. Clearing another 3 million seems like a pittance for losing a player like Byrd.
My thought is, why gamble for another 3-4 million when you have 30 million to use now?
