Jeff Duncan's 2017 Saints Mock Draft 3.0
1 Attachment(s)
Round 1 (No. 11 overall): Defensive End Taco Charlton, Michigan
The Saints will have plenty of options if they stay at No. 11 but I don’t think they can pass up Charlton. We all know pass rush is the Saints’ greatest need and this selectin could come down to a choice between Charlton vs. Derek Barnett. Barnett is more consistent and productive. Charlton is more athletic and precocious. Tough call but Sean Payton and Mickey Loomis are naturally aggressive and the ceiling for Charlton is greater than Barnett’s. The 6-5, 277-pound Charlton has tremendous size and has been compared to Justin Tuck and Chandler Jones. The Saints would gladly take that kind of talent alongside Cameron Jordan, Sheldon Rankins and Nick Fairley. I also loved this comment from an NFL scout about Charlton in The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel: “Loved by his teammates and loves the game of football." http://media.nola.com/saints_impact/...42b980794c.jpg read more on NOLA Surprise ... surprise. https://media.giphy.com/media/d1aX0h5vPk0r6/giphy.gif |
Re: Jeff Duncan's 2017 Saints Mock Draft 3.0
At pick #11 ... no to "Taco".

Re: Jeff Duncan's 2017 Saints Mock Draft 3.0
Im not as up to speed this year but out of the pass rushers likely there at 11 i like him. Its the weight as much as anything. I dont like 250lb DE. They get tun off the line too often.

Re: Jeff Duncan's 2017 Saints Mock Draft 3.0
NOPE!!!
I don't think he is the BPA here at all. I want LB Riddick |
Re: Jeff Duncan's 2017 Saints Mock Draft 3.0
Solomon Thomas
Derek Barnett Demarcus Walker Takk McKinley (UCLA Pro Day is 3/21/17) All above DE graded better than "Taco" Charlton this season. IMO any team selecting him prior to pick #15 is reaching. Takk is arguably the 2nd best DE's in this draft class behind Myles G. Remember how it went the last time we passed on a UCLA player (Saints selected Kikaha, very next pick was Eric Kendricks who has already become a young stud). Ireland and company must nail these upcoming draft selections. |
Re: Jeff Duncan's 2017 Saints Mock Draft 3.0
for anyone who covers the Saints I am at a lost that they think we have ever drafted on 'NEEDS'. It has always been under our courrent regime to draft BPA unless its a WR then always WR... LMAO.

Re: Jeff Duncan's 2017 Saints Mock Draft 3.0
Does anyone else cringe at the words huge upside? Let's go for combat ready instead of "project". Especially for our first pick.
And second. And third..... |

Re: Jeff Duncan's 2017 Saints Mock Draft 3.0
Taco has some speed and agility. I could see it. Not a great bull rusher but if he gets back there look out. He also has some good spin moves. Certainly an upgrade for us.

Re: Jeff Duncan's 2017 Saints Mock Draft 3.0
Taco is a great case study of short area burst in the 10 over 40 times. You look at 4.92 and people jump to 34 DE conclusion.
Dig into the numbers and he almost has the same results of Derek Barnett, Derek Barnett SDE Tennessee 6030 259 4.88 #9 Jr Kind of amazing despite being two inches taller and 20 pounds heavier. I am expecting better times for both at their pro day. Here is the Taco Teaser: This was his first full year as a starter. This is were this turns into an apple and oranges comparison with Barnett. Taco sets the edge just as good as any player in the draft. Question is how far will his pass rushing skill develop since you are just scratching the surface. Right now he a two down DE with the arrow pointing up So do you think the sacks will come with more playing time and coaching? Taco Charlton DE Michigan 6052 272 4.92 #33 Sr, RAW Has always been strong against the run game. Really coming along as a pass rusher this year, learning how to bend the edge and developing pass rush moves. Charlton has a NFL body with room to get even stronger, using his long reach (34") to extend into blockers and bully them wherever he wants them to go. He also has the lower body agility to sidestep block attempts and quickly regain his momentum to close on the ball carrier, showing a variety of rush moves against Michigan State blockers. Charlton needs to be more controlled with his rush sequence, but he has the point of attack power to set a hard edge vs. the run. Taco has all the ingredients of a NFL starter, long arms, muscular build, athleticism and quickness. He is starting to turn into a complete player. |
Re: Jeff Duncan's 2017 Saints Mock Draft 3.0
At 6'6 he will affect the passing lanes as he develops too. Be hard to get the ball over a 7ft target as he is rushing you

Re: Jeff Duncan's 2017 Saints Mock Draft 3.0
Why not trade back five spots, still take Taco Charlton, Malik McDowell or another big DE, and pick up a third round pick as KC did with us on the Cooks acquisition trade?
It's not that I dislike Charlton, but if we're staying at No. 11 - you've got to get full, total value for the selection and not just reach for need... I do not like Barnett as even a first round pick... |
Re: Jeff Duncan's 2017 Saints Mock Draft 3.0
We can't force teams to trade up with us.

Re: Jeff Duncan's 2017 Saints Mock Draft 3.0
My Take on Duncan's Mock Draft:
No. 11 (R1, 11) DE Taco Charlton, Michigan; Height: 6' 6"; Weight: 277 lbs. He's got the measurables we need opposite Cam Jordan, and I'd like this pick more, if we were in the 20-25 range of round 1; in fact, I like this pick more than the media popular of UT Derek Barnett, who's hit his ceiling and doesn't have the length we need for our scheme; if Reuben Foster is gone, I'd definitely like the idea of moving back some to get a DE like this... No. 32 (R1, 32) QB Patrick Mahomes, Texas Tech; Height: 6' 2", Weight: 225 lbs. Not sure we'll even have this selection if we acquire NE CB Malcolm in the Middle Butler. Don't like this selection, reminds me of Russell Wilson - overrated, nervous feet, can't make a read to save his life with the pressure on. No. 42 (R2, 10) Fabian Moreau, UCLA; Height: 6’ 0”, Weight: 205 lbs. I really like this pick and Moreau; but it'd be more likely he will be selected with the 32nd pick (if we kept it); this guy had a slow start to his Sr year with an injury; but he's physical and he can lock up under a receiver's chin and run with 'em all over the field... No. 76 (R3, 12) DE Jordan Willis, Kansas St; Height: 6’ 3”, Weight: 260 lbs. Another player I really love, who's really put on a helluva an audition this draft season; he's got just the right size to play the weak side DE; makes plays, forces turnovers, creates havoc and the Saints have a good history with K-State DEs (Darren Howard), but he'll be gone by the third round and like the previous pick, we'd need to take him with our second round pick... No. 103 (R3, 39) TE Jake Butt, Michigan; Height: 6’ 5”, Weight: 245 lbs. This seems a bit early for Butt's skill set; while I very much like the thinking of improving TE, Butt's a reach here and I'd rather get some depth at safety where plenty of options still should be here... Round 6 (196) LB Jordan Evans, Oklahoma If this would happen, it would be an absolute coup; I really believe he's going in the fourth/fifth round, but if he's there, this would be a real steal... |
Re: Jeff Duncan's 2017 Saints Mock Draft 3.0
Bad timing (torn ACL) on Jake. He has 1st round talent at the TE position.

OJ better be off the board at 11. 32 - Garret Bolles, Marcus Williams , T.J. Watt and even Obi Melifonwu better be off the board 42 Quincy Wilson Cordrea Tankersley and even Chris Godwin better be off the board after that it is always a crap shoot. |

I mean you want a pass rush and the best one is there on the board to come around in a decade... package #1 and #32 - send it to the Browns. I also thought that if they fell in love with a LSU RB theat could move us up to 4? But then again its a LSU player. |

No. 42 (R2, 10) TE Adam Shaheen, Ashland; Height: 6’ 6”, Weight: 277 lbs. Quote:
Bolles' baggage is a concern for a first rounder... Marcus Williams is a late second round safety - Josh Jones will be better... Obi-Wan Melifonwu? Workout warrior, Flavor of the Month - where was the fanfare this past season? Quote:

Re: Jeff Duncan's 2017 Saints Mock Draft 3.0
I just looked at 5 different "top draft prospects" articles- he falls between # 17 - 26 in all 5, near the higher end (23) in most
He has the size and seems like a character player, but probably not worth a top 15 pick Really depends on what the Bengals do or what we think they'll do at #9 |
Re: Jeff Duncan's 2017 Saints Mock Draft 3.0
If he's slated by the so called experts to be a 17-26 pick, does it really matter if we pick him at 11?
He's still a 1st round pass rushing DE. Should we pass on a 1st round pass rusher because he's "slotted" to be picked a few picks later? I just don't agree with that. EVERY 1st round prospect has the talent to become all-world. IMO there's not much difference between an 11th or a 17th. |

One thing bugs me about Willis. He only played on the left side of the DL his entire college career. I believe we set on that side. Call it the Peat based fear. |

Re: Jeff Duncan's 2017 Saints Mock Draft 3.0
Just saw a mock that had us taking Barnett then riddick with 32. If we got that and either white or jones slipped to 42 that would b a perfect draft and trade next yrs 2nd to NE. That would b my ideal offseason. The de we need. A great lb. and the CB we need with a very promising young one as well. Thoughts?

Re: Jeff Duncan's 2017 Saints Mock Draft 3.0
Also as a late round pick at rb. Not sure how he did at the combine but hill from wyo did very well in his career. Never should of came out early
