According to one source nobody involved thought the #11 pick was ever in play. That includes Belichick.

I'm sure the #11 had to come up in conversation at some point... To me though; Butler isn't even worth the #32...

This "one source" person is going to have to provide proof of this claim. If the Saints say they won't trade #11, but haven't mentioned #32, then it stands to reason that if they can't come together on a deal for a player the Saints clearly covet (for whatever reasons), then the Patriots are likely trying to get that #11 pick. If they can't get that, then you can bet they will be asking for the Saints to pony up on extra picks, either in this draft or next year's. Neither of those things would be wise for a short cornerback who has succedeed only for a short period of time on a team that is notorious for making average players look like stars, in my humble opinion. It's why the Pats are always so willing to trade guys away. They know they don't need them.

How any NFL team can still fall for this same trick by the Patriots, is beyond me. Learn a lesson, and stay away from the Patriots.

If I had a nickel for every time I heard that, the NFL would fine and suspend me.

If the #11 was in play the Saints could have simply signed him to an offer sheet. Since they wouldn't Belichick would logically know #11 wasn't an option. If the #11 isn't an option then nothing matters until Butler signs the waiver. THAT is the holdup. Nothing can happen until then. You can only negotiate to trade (within the rules) a player that is currently under contract. Butler isn't.
